Re: FunCostumes.com Frock Coat
So the fiber content of this coat is not written anywhere? Odd. I was really wondering what is it actually made of.

Re: FunCostumes.com Frock Coat
but why stop now? You've made everything else - just go for an all 100% handmade costume
Re: FunCostumes.com Frock Coat
Polyester huh? Does that make it kinda stiff? Eh, I suppose fabric softener would help. Still can't beat that price. Nice find mojo!
Re: FunCostumes.com Frock Coat
That's the plan. But I can't find a good fabric to make the coat. So I might just get the extra large size of this one (there should be more fabric for the pleats) and have my seamstress remake it to fit me. That's the backup plan.Mojo Turbo wrote:but why stop now? Yeah, how does it feel if it's 100% polyester? The Ebony is actually 50% polyester too, but the other 50% are cotton.
Have you made any mods yet? Perhaps you should sew the sides and run a cord through the bottom edge like on Cristian's photo to simulate some pleating.
Oh, I support the question -- what's the dot com? What company makes this?

Looks nice on this small-ish photo. But no larger photo available... Could be bad up close?

Re: FunCostumes.com Frock Coat
today I noticed that the piping on the cuffs is on backwards - they have the rounded edge under the button and it should be pointing down to the floor

Cap.cristianSparrow wrote:As for the side vents, yes they were open in the movie coat, but there was a considerable amount more fabric there than in this coat, so it hid the split. The skirting was fuller, and it was all held together with a string going through all the layers of pleating (Christian has some great photos of this) which held all the pleating together. Because of these details the split in the skirts never really showed except for in the back. But yes indeed, from what I understand, the side vents were in fact split. This was also done on real, period coats (though I think the string was something from the costume dept.)
NO they are not open.
Looks like is open but in fact is sewed.
Original coats, from that time period, would have had an open slit, caught at a few places, just to allow the sword to slide through. Also, the 'string' are called 'swing catches' (is done with a normal thread, doubled up, waxed, and pulled through itself, creating loads of little knots) and they also would have been in place on original pieces. They are strictly to stop the pleats from swinging open all the way, and it keeps the shape.
If anyone is ever interested in seeing a real articles up close, the London V&A offer behind the scene costume examinations- where a member of the staff wearing rubber gloves will show you any part of the costumes you wish. You're not allowed to take photographs unfortunately, but a notepad and pencil would suffice:)
I'm just finishing up my new version of the Frock Coat, and I've stitched the pleat opening shut, and have done swing catches, like the one in this photograph. (photos will be up soon!)

Re: FunCostumes.com Frock Coat
any updates, mojo? I'm wondering what you're doing as far as tailoring goes..I'm planning on getting this coat soon. Does the back split line up properly on your back? Does it go up far enough?
Re: FunCostumes.com Frock Coat
the back is wide with no darts at all - and the sleeves are very generous - lots of space, I would totally be willing to take it to a prof tailor but my wife INSISTS that she knows how to take it in... so we are just waiting for her to bust out the machine
Re: FunCostumes.com Frock Coat
is it a comparable fabric to the costumebase coat? I've got one thats ruined, but i could use it to make pleats..
Re: FunCostumes.com Frock Coat
never seen a CB coat upclose, but from what I can tell... the CB coat is a lighter material in color and weight....
Re: FunCostumes.com Frock Coat
Gotta say, the fabric on this coat looked stellar. Very, very similar to the ebony everyone's dying to get their hands on.
Re: FunCostumes.com Frock Coat
the more I try it on the more my wife and I have noticed that the "fit" is super wide. The sleeves don't fit like a suit jacket and the shoulders dont rest firmly on. I would certainly take it to be re-sized if I could - but I doubt they could do much with the sleeves.
Re: FunCostumes.com Frock Coat
would bringing in the centerline back seam fix that problem? I'm still planning on buying this coat. Is it easily fixable?
Re: FunCostumes.com Frock Coat
Ah. I tell you, I am so tempted to buy this set just to have a back up coat... I love mine, and toiled hours on end (along with my wonderful mother) to make it, but a back up version would be nice...
And, as has been stated, I can sell the other bits off on eBay. Or keep them for other things. Do you know what the fabric of the waistcoat is? Can it be dyed?
***Nevermind - answered my own question***
