The Frock Coat Fabric
So in case you don't know, Chad is making an OST Jack Costume. (I assume for Brandon, but who knows) He alerted us to the fact that coat fabric is .....gone?
I still show that the Java is still out there, but even the licorice raffia seems to be ...gone
I updated the wiki to reflect only in stock items, but we need to find some better alternatives.

Re: The Frock Coat Fabric
Well, there maybe some hope with dyeing other types of raffia. I ended up selling off all the raffia I had found when I posted this thread: https://brethrencourt.rpg-board.net/t465-so-i-thought-i-found-the-right-raffia#5103
I have not heard from Lawrence or Pinder as far as their attempts to dye the material. I sold the remainder of the yardage to Simon (Button-It), so at some point I imagine he'll be trying to dye it. Between the three of them, maybe a formula for the dyeing process will yield something close to the ebony. After looking around for some more raffia to make a coat for my son, I believe the raffia I bought is actually called "Espresso". I have sample order in from Interior Mall to see if I can get more. For kids coat it won't be as bad as the full 6 yards. We'll see what happens.

Ok. Interior Mall was a bust. They couldn't send me any samples of the espresso..they said it was discontinued. L&S Textile's website keeps giving me a "Your not authorized to view this page" error when I click on the wiki link. So they may be out as well. Right now Joann's is having a sale on their Java for $26/yd. I also found another raffia type called Midnight. Very similar, but has a redish weave in it. Who knows what their "wrong" side may look like. Search for "Upholstery Fabric-SMC Designs Newport Midnight" or "Upholstery Fabric-SMC Designs Newport Java"

Not sure how I feel about that Midnight with the red. I do, however, have some slight results with the fabric you sold me. I just need to get pictures in sunlight.

Re: The Frock Coat Fabric
Yeah, I've heard this from several sources. Seems the "right stuff" wasn't even available to the filmmakers for OST, because Jack's coat was definitely a different shade for that too. There are comparison pis... erm... somewhere... At any rate, it seems we're out of luck in that department.
Re: The Frock Coat Fabric
So I picked up 3 yds of the above "Java" from Joann's when it was for sale at $22/yd. Dyed with some royal blue and little bit of Navy blue. This raffia is a different weave and is lighter weight than the licorice or ebony, but then again...it's not even the same maker. Here are some progress shots of my boy's frock coat in direct sunlight. We were lucky enough to find the right trim that YD uses at Joann's this past weekend, so we'll be adding that this week and the buttons (using smaller repro Civil War uniform buttons).

That looks pretty good to my eye...
What is the trim you got - any chance of a SKU number or description? I did all the trim on my frock by hand with a natrual cording, but it's a bit off. I'd like to get something closer. Do you have a pic of it?

Re: The Frock Coat Fabric
Does anyone have any good ideas for darkening or at least dulling buttons? I had the buttons I bought for my son's coat dangling over ammonia fumes and while it did put some black dots on the brass, they are still shiny? I'm running out of time, but I thought the ammonia would do more than it did. Any methods I can do in the next couple days?? Help!!

Re: The Frock Coat Fabric
I'd say you have two choices that would work quite well.
A: Acrylic paint
B: Sophisticated Finishes (you can get this at Michael's, Hobby Lobby, etc.)

Re: The Frock Coat Fabric
