What color is the thread on the On Stranger Tides wasitcoat?
WHAT COLOR IS THE THREAD ON THE OST WAISTCOAT
So we have three members here that worked on set, wore the waistcoat, and had first had "eyeball" viewing of said piece!
You three hold the key to our decision! If you feel you can handle this heavy burden please let us know! The weight of the costuming world sits upon your shoulders!!!
So let's settle this once and for all!!! Pick your choice in the Poll and let us know what you think!!!

I did not "work on set" this is in the "Ask a Jack" section and you are clearly asking for their answer.... or am I reading this wrong?
Re: WHAT COLOR IS THE THREAD ON THE OST WAISTCOAT
I also wanted to mention that I personally felt the thread had a sort of antique gold/copper hue, and that the coppery part is what gave it a "reddish" quality in certain light. But again, I didn't work on set, so I didn't see it in person of course. That was just my opinion based on all the photos I've seen thusfar.

Non-employed Jacks as Jack On Set votes are welcome too! We are an EOC! Equal Opportunity Court, savvy?

I wouldn't rely on anyones memories for this - short of having a thread from the waistcoat and matching it, it's near impossible to say accurately - even photos are misleading. I mean it can look about 5 different colours in one picture!
Personally I'm not going to stick my neck too far out on the line with a specific colour, as they're more guidelines anyway. Obviously gold is the leading candidate, but it's not a metallic thread, just a standard thread, so the boring answer is it's probably some shade of beige (or "non metallic, not too yellowy gold" if you want to sound more glamourous)! As I have a feeling it's probably a synthetic fibre it's embroidered with - ie rayon or something, it's going that have that shininess that will pick up reflections of other colours around it

New pics from Richard of Hero vest "proving" (his words not mine) that theres no gold.
Flash
No flash
Looks to me that flash doesn't show much color change, but the sunlight hitting the second pic sure looks like a faded gold tint to me.

This rather proves my point that it picks up whatever colours are around it being reflected. Look at the coat next to it, the buttons and even the buckle - they're picking up that brownish hue. The second one, with less light on it on it to reflect the surrounding colours, softens that effect much more, so unless you can see where the picture is taken, it's fairly worthless. I could show closeup pictures like this that show none of those colours.

I'd be interested in those pics.

So I think I've come to the conclusion that the color is a silver mirror color

I'd like to see those pics too! Having seen it in Hollywood, I would say more maroonish or if anything kinda greyish to be quite honest. Even looking at it up close, it doesn't really pop. But I didn't see ANY gold at all from any angle up close.

What color or shade of Nu Life was used to knock down that shine?

Re: WHAT COLOR IS THE THREAD ON THE OST WAISTCOAT
tan? Maroon? Man, I need glasses... has anyone considered more of a champagne color?
Re: WHAT COLOR IS THE THREAD ON THE OST WAISTCOAT
Has anyone considered just doing what looks right to them? I don't think its gold..but neither maroon, more of a yellowish purple.. don't keelhaul me for saying this but there seems to be so many roads open here and everyones running down the one road causing a bloody jam. Be creative, if you like gold and it looks gold in some angles, go for it..same with maroon or yellowish purple.

Yea yea... like if the thread was champagne, it would look like the same color is a mirror, but in sunlight, it would "reflect" the gold sun. I am no physicist, but that sounds right in my mind. I bet Bill Nye could describe it better....

Wise words. Ultimately this is what everyone should do. I think the problem people have is when certain colours were introduced to the mix not because of what they thought it was, but because it helped them to either sell their product, or say that their replica was better than everyone else's because the colour is better.
Even if I had a bit of the actual fabric in front of me I'm fairly sure I could get the embroidery to look whatever colour I wanted as it does pick up colours around it, and likewise you can probably get the wrong colours to look right by the same method. The ultimate test is to wear a waistcoat to Disneyland and get a picture next to the Jack there in the same light (assuming it is the same fabric as the screen one!)

man, I want to find out, it's just that - that department is so far removed for mine and for me to intrude on those employees would be a faux pas. I can't even ask the actor to take pics of his costume backstage. I'd have to be there as a guest and take pics like any other person. I know 2 guys on facebook who "dawn the wig" but have never met them in real life (only facebook) and those "entertainment types" tend to be prima-donnas.
Re: WHAT COLOR IS THE THREAD ON THE OST WAISTCOAT
To me, going only by the pics I've seen, it looks like an old gold. I have Acmes vest fab, and it does seem a tad dark IMO, I like the look of SMWs too. Both are so different!
What Im curious about is with the HERO costume in SoCal, WHY weren't you Jacks there analyzing this magical thread???!

I don't know who on this board has seen it beside me, Ronnie and Frankie (I know one other Jack was there, but can't remember his screen name, he has a round compass and a hand painted gold vest... any help?)
And besides the "magical thread" is behind display glass. I am going back this week with my camera set to different settings, for sure.
