Re: Angelica Teach ( Film style ) Costume Build

and if you notice....
it's relatively the same shape as the "apple" on the back. I think it's a heart though....

Re: Angelica Teach ( Film style ) Costume Build
I opened my closet to find my vinyl to work on the corset and came across a mess so big it would scare the kraken to the locker.
So I got lazy and decided to postpone that.
So now I'm working on making up some trim for the hat. The synthetic leather strip I'm using is about 5mm ( just over 1/8th ) width and I cut it into a trillion little pieces and am pinning it onto some gimp for the edging and band. It's not SA but I'm hoping to come across a trim more like it in my 4am lurkings in the future. Right now, I need to have something so I can have it done for the movie, and I think it'll look good enough for my liking once it's all together. The gimp is about 1/2 inch width.
I tried folding the leather to get the scrunched look that her trim has since it's one connected strip, but it was just a smidge too stiff and I couldn't pin it properly, so this will have to do.
Thoughts?
The hat is a faux velvet which is kind of gross, but I love the shape of it. I think I might experiment covering it with some watered down glue to get it more dull and flat looking. But I know for sure this costume is going to be an ever-evolving one, so it'll do for the movie and then can be improved later on. I do have a crapload of felt that I may try making my own with as well, using this one as the base for shape...depends on how lazy/motivated I get.
I'm thinking with all the decor and feathers added it will be a good stand-in for now.
aaand crappy cellphone pic now that the two band pieces are done.
( it's just the weird cell phone flash that makes the leather bits look different widths, I just cut the lengths, they're all one width from the same strip )
Sadly, my digital camera passed on tonight... so no good progress shots 'til I decide on a new one.

Re: Angelica Teach ( Film style ) Costume Build
Umm... it's a $10 musketeer costume hat. Ebay it up!!! Easy to find.
I couldn't find a style good enough in felt either... but I might stuff it and try to make one overtop with a bit of a smaller brim, though. It does look like it'll get the job done, however. It's a decent size...the felt version of this costume hat looked a little small. But like I said, the brim on this one is a bit big...go figure. No happy medium! Here's what it looks like on, which is always easier to tell what it ACTUALLY looks like:
obviously before mods..
also..YAY!!! Got a couple yards of a maroon silk shantung today for the back of my vest(s) for only $5/m. Hooray! It will need some sun fading and roughing up to weather it down a bit but one heck of a deal if I do say so myself!

That's the one I thought looked like it would be too small...but upon having ridiculous issues with the brim of mine, I think I'm going to switch to that one anyways.

You my dear are a legend
This is why I like having the ladies around... I mean, after all, Yordreem and ACME would never have been able to make OST vest had it not been for Sparrowed. Shylaah made one of the best Sparrow frock coats for Mooney back in the day. Represent!!!
Re: Angelica Teach ( Film style ) Costume Build
For the price, it's not a huge gamble really, lol. And most sellers let you do returns if you don't like it. I've got that sucker on a watch list for my girl in case I CAN convince her to do it. She costumes alot anyway, I'll just have to be extra convincing

Re: Angelica Teach ( Film style ) Costume Build
ok! here are my updates!
-calling local costume shop on monday/tuesday to see if they have the felt musketeer hat so i can go pick it up instead of ordering on ebay and hoping it gets here on time...
- ribbon for the vest is in ( beautiful brown velvet with pale gold edges... PERFECT ), hopefully my brother brings it tomorrow as i sent it to his US address by mistake...
- still waiting on the paisley vest fabric ( EEEK... though i got a rush order, guaranteed delivery by april 27... it says it hasn't even shipped yet... NERVOUS! )
- got new vest fabric for the back. gotta weather it up. it's too pretty. silk shantung.
- got pheasant feathers. they are 'clumps'. sounds gross. scared to receive. but are 14" long.
- got 100" of 2" wide leather belt blank to make a pseudo-ghetto baldric
have to sculpt baldric details tonight/tomorrow! not sure if i'm going to make the belt or not...might buy ACMEs...depends how much leather i have leftover and how much motivation i have to sculpt all those things. I'm TERRIBLE at sculpting buckles.
DYING HAIR/EYEBROWS DARK BROWN NEXT WEEK! OOoOOoOoooOOOooOOo. and then off to the Dominican for a week to work on my genuine Caribbean tan!
I'm kinda excited/nervous to see how I'll look. Most of my life I've been of fair complexion, blonde hair and green/gold eyes... though I've had auburn hair recently, my skin tone and eyes have stayed light. So to go dark brunette, get a sweet Caribbean tan and wear brown contacts... I feel like I'm going to look in the mirror and not recognize myself! LOL
So excited to sculpt the baldric details! WOO HOOOOOo. And to put the feathers in the hat. ... after I get a new hat.
ps. CMM, wth? ( i dont know why all of my replies to you start that way LOL ) why would you have to CONVINCE a girl?! Who WOULDN'T want to be a super hot spanish pirate-ess who gets to woo and swoon with Jack Sparrow all day? I see no need for convincing!

Re: Angelica Teach ( Film style ) Costume Build
I know, she's mad... MAAAAD!! lol
I'm loving the progress update, really nice to see all the pieces falling into place. I was thinking about those buckles too. Sculpting em seems to be the only real way to get em done. I somehow don't see em being as readily available as Jack's buckles (doubt even CostumeBase will have a close enough rip off version, lol)

Re: Angelica Teach ( Film style ) Costume Build
Yeah...the only problem is that I'm a TERRIBLE sculptor. I have no tools so I just use my fingers, nails, sewing needles and q-tips. LOL but I did a couple of the baldric conchos and the 'heart-apple' thing on the back... I"m going to try to press them into the clay to make good enough molds to recreate the rest but this clay is so crumbly and awful that I don't know how well it'll work. Hoping for something passable 'til I can buy a real one one day... *sigh*

Re: Angelica Teach ( Film style ) Costume Build
I've used plasticine in the past to sculpt things, and it's worked pretty well. Though I might go with craft foam or something for this project, seeing as it's more, i dunno, precise work?

Yeah...the only problem is that I'm a TERRIBLE sculptor
I tired to make Jack's pony tail cross with sculpy.... I gave up so fast....
Re: Angelica Teach ( Film style ) Costume Build
I keep WANTING to give up... but it's the best/only affordable way I can be as accurate as possible for the movie. I think I'm definitely going to buy ACMEs belt though.. I don't think I can sculpt much more than what I need to for the baldric. x_x Hopefully it's not too over my budget... I know it's going to cost more than what I've spent on the entire thing so far... lol... argh....
Here's a few pieces I have done for my baldric thus far.

Re: Angelica Teach ( Film style ) Costume Build
YAAAAAYYYYY!!!
Vest fabric has been shipped!!! It's on its way!!!
Then I can either order more and sell it, or make it available publicly for purchase off of the Spoonflower site. I think I may make it public for a limited time for those who contacted me with interest and then order a boatload and sell it or it as vests on the bay for some extra costuming funds.
I'M SO EXCITED TO SEE IT!!! HOORAY!!!

If you've got the time, you might also consider sewing up finished waistcoats for Angelica costumers. Would be wayyyyy profitable

exactly sell some waistcoats - and viola, free baldric and belt....
Re: Angelica Teach ( Film style ) Costume Build
so...spoonflower fabric came in.
not happy.
the colours are too bright and too washed out all at the same time. The pattern printed really clear and the detail is great but the colour... ungh.. ._.
I'm going to make it into a vest anyways, and order a yard from Fabric on Demand and see how the colours turn out from them. If worse comes to worse, I'll redo the pattern after ordering a colour swatch from one of the two...but won't make it in time for the movie.
To be fair, in person it's not as bright and it actually has a faded black look to the background which initially I thought was how the park Ange was.
Either way, I'm not happy but it will do for now until I can improve it later on.
*sigh*
