Can you fellahs please "set the record straight" once and for all, how many times the sash goes around the waist and how it is applied and tied? I think that is a H-U-G-E trouble area for most of us and we could certainly use your advice and counsel.

Total it's wrapped around twice and then just knotted - the loop is formed by not pulling one of the emds all the way through. It's not that complicated when you get the hang of it.

Start with it in front of you in your hands, hands shoulder width apart at waist level - the ends should be around ground level depending how long your sash is. Pass each end behind your back and round the front again, then tie it off (the side that comes from behind your back on your left side is the one that will form the loop).

Simon: THANK YOU!

I've been telling people this forever but nobody seems to believe me, haha. It's really quite easy. I've been doing it this way for years, without the aid of safety pins, elastic, velcro, or anything, and it works like a charm. That's even the side I generally use to loop it - although depending on the length sometimes I'll resort to using the other one. I've found that it makes little difference.

The trick is to make sure the side that's going to be looped is a ton longer than the other side. This way, once you loop it, you don't get one end really long and the other really, really sort. A little difference between the two ends is a good thing, as they're always a bit uneven in the movies, but basically you've just got to play with it until your happy with the length.

And as for the sort of half-knot with one end not pulled all the way through, most people I tell how to do it say they think it won't stay that way, but it totally will. Once you put the belts over it, the whole aparatus is held in place quite firmly (assuming your belts fit snugly). The only time I know it's been a slight problem for me is while doing "island Jack," and therefore not wearing the belts. That's really the only time I'd recommend resorting to pins, etc.

Really? That's all there is to it?! All this time we've come up with all these crazy ways of tying this thing! So it actually crosses itself in the back huh? It totally looks like it lays flat all the way around. So now tell me this... how long is the actual screen used sash?

I'd say it was around 10ft, maybe a touch longer - depends on your waist measurement though as to what will fit you and look right though.

Tying the Sash Empty Sash tying Video

redsleighdown wrote:Yup.

ClownPrince, what mod are you doing? I'm interested in what you found out!

It's kinda hard to explain but I'll try. Essentially the ends that hang, including the loop, are a separate piece of fabric. The sash is wrapped around twice, sewn together, then cut in the back at the 1/2 mark. Velcro is added to attach that part again for the outfit. The extra fabric is then sewn on to the front to form the loop and what should be the ends of the sash after wrapping, so it all is one piece. No messing with safety pins or weird movements to hold it all in place while you get your belts on. I was talking to TallCaptainJack (Billy) the other week and he was talking about Brandon's set-up that he took from Disney after being let go. When all is said and done, it just velcros on, no fuss, and you never have to worry about the ends and loop being too long or too short.

I've seen that and I've done it before, but sometimes you don't always pay attention or there's some snag in the fabric you can't see and feel. I want to at least try this method and see how it works out, considering that's how all the Jacks employed by Disney have theirs set up, must work.

Admittedly that was the old school method when they dressed as COTBP, now that they switched to OST who knows, but since they kept the old flower belt, you're right they probably kept the sash as well.

This has vexed me time and again. Many thanks for the tip, Simon! I was on my way out the door to go to work, and I HAD to try it before I left. Worked like a charm!

Now, to cut some of the extra length off of my IKEA sash...

I definitely agree with your logic here. I prefer to actually tie my sash (I'm weird, and I get hung up on doing it the way Jack "would really have done it," haha), but you're dead right. Many times it just comes out... well... wonky. And then you've got to take it all off again and re-tie it, which is a pain. It's hard to get it all to lay flat, and not to twist, and it's hard to get the ends to lay one-on-top-of-the-other, instead of side-by-side sometimes. So ultimately this is probably a really good method if you want it to lay exactly the same, every single time. I'm quite sure that's why Disney does it. That, and it's probably tons faster to put on. I just couldn't get my head around the fact that I'd be "cheating," heh.

I also think there is a huge difference between tying the acme and tying the IKEA - the IKEA is very stiff and lays like a table cloth, whereas the ACME ties loose and lays more bunchy and soft. So... talking about tying one, doesn't really look and feel the same as the other.

Very good point. I'm totally coming at it from the IKEA perspective. However, previous to having an IKEA sash I had one out of a really featherweight cotton (the stripe pattern wasn't quite right, but it looked pretty decent for what was available back in '04). At any rate, I tied that one the same way, and it seemed to work pretty well. Still, the ACME sash is linen, so it's a different beast yet.

I heard that some Jacks use Velcro on their sash to keep it in place or even use a 2 piece sash to make it easier to hang.

Aside the ends/loop being too far to the left imo (should be more over the leg than on the side), very nice. Seems I need to get me an ACME sash or two.

I agree, but easily shifted. Wasn't being too careful because I wasn't putting everything on, but just let your first end hang more in front, or once you're done, shift everything right and voila!
