The Brethren Court OST Review Thread!
*SPOILERS AHOY*
So, since RT is completely unreliable and full of morons ( saying for example: this movie is less fun than AWE, so incredibly slow and dull, and at the same time has so much action it's exhausting and overwhelming [ WHAT?! ] ), I'd like this thread to be for our personal reviews so that other 'pirates' can share their opinions and likes/dislikes amongst our fellow brethren that will make more sense than the pea brain opinion of a 'critic'.
Share your reviews and give a percentage! Bias is OK because we're all bias! Besides, we only care about what other fans think anyways. If you're not a fan of the franchise, you're obviously not going to... be a fan.
I know a lot of you have seen it already! So post a little blurb and what you would rate it, as well as rank it among the other 3!

Re: The Brethren Court OST Review Thread!
wow, that's a harsh review. Am I so biased towards POTC that I didn't have any of those issues? Also, Angelica didn't wear a skirt. Did this person watch the film?
Re: The Brethren Court OST Review Thread!
Yeah, that one review is just trash...
I really liked it, but I do think that it is more a movie for die hard fans than the general public. There are a lot of things that you need to understand from the first three to follow it, and know those movies well.
Still, I think, for me at least, it was better than the last 2, though not quite up to CotBP. I will say that I found Philip's character unecessary - the movie could have gone on well enough without him and to an extent I think they were trying to find a Will Turner-esque/Orlando Bloom-esque "pretty boy" (and I don't in any way mean that in an insulting manner) to play more of a straight man to counter Jack.
That said, I can't wait to see it again all three days this weekend (and since I"m doing Jack at movie theaters each day, I will get to!!)

Re: The Brethren Court OST Review Thread!
HEY! You guys misunderstood my intentions.
'Critic reviews' and the 'tomatometer' are absolute trash because they're judging it like it's supposed to be a ground shattering, controversial, foreign language Oscar grab film as opposed to purely fun fiction and fantasy and have the stuff the reviews say all contradict each other.
This is a thread for the TBC's own reviews and scores to make our own 'tomatometer'... or just rating percentage.
If you've seen it, write a little blurb review! Score it from 1-10 and rank it from 1-4 in comparison with the other 3!
changing the topic so its a bit more clear...

Re: The Brethren Court OST Review Thread!
Well I saw it yesterday, and my initial reaction was that the first half was messy as hell - it was clunky and lots of the dialogue seemed to be awkward and just a way to explain things rather than actually having any chemistry to it. The last third or so was much better though, and the last scene in the entire film seemed to really be the only bit where Jack himself shone through - most of Jack's early appearances seemed to be missing a bit of his usual charm. It was enjoyable but definitely could have been much better, which is a always a shame. Hopefully on second viewing I'll be less on the look out for the scenes I did, and able to enjoy the film a bit more. A lot of the reviews I've seen have been overly harsh, but some of the criticisms about the way it's been put together are definitely valid.
Re: The Brethren Court OST Review Thread!
I've written my review elsewhere. Enjoyed it the second time around.

Regardless of the bad reviews, I'm really looking forward to it tonight!
I absolutely hated AWE, so as long as it's not a convoluted mess like it's predecessor I'll be happy!

I agree... I thought it was better than the last two, but not as good as the first one...
But the ending really sets it up to be quite an epic 5th film if they do it right! And I really hope they do!
Re: The Brethren Court OST Review Thread!
Also as I have been posting ALL over the web in response to critics critiques!
Forget about the first three movies!!! Forget about Elizabeth and dear ole William! Forget about the romance that existed between Lizzie and Will! Forget about The Locker, Tia Dalma, etc.
Walk into this movie with no connection to the previous movie with the exception of Jack, Mr. Gibbs, The Black Pearl, Jack The Undead Monkey, and Mr. Cotton's parrot! People will enjoy this movie very much if they do not constantly compare it to the first three movies, rank them in order of preference (except after you have seen it), and keep wishing that Lizzie and dear ole William were in it!
If people walk into the theater with this in mind they will leave disappointed!!! If they walk into the theater with a fresh slate (which this movie is) you will walk away somewhat or extremely pleased!!!
Mark my word and consider them MARKED!! Huzzah!

Re: The Brethren Court OST Review Thread!
Missionary Phillip and Syrena are the love story of this movie but it is definitely not set up to continue through Pirates 5,6,7,8,9.........and so on! Phillip's character to me is the moral centerpiece of the movie that puts balance between the antagonist Blackbeard, the innocent bystander Syrena, the confused Angelica, and the ever so witty protagonist Captain Jack Sparrow!
With the hint of The Black Pearl, Mr. Cotton's parrot, and Jack The Undead Monkey I have a strong feeling that we will see "The Crew" in POTC 5! That battle for The Black Pearl between Barbossa and Capn Jack will continue!

Actually according to one fellow script write over on RPF POTC 5 script was turned in a week after it was announced in the Hollywood Reporter. Mr. Rossio was apparently putting some finishing touches upon it!

Re: The Brethren Court OST Review Thread!
Just got back!
Boy, do I have a lot to say about it.
7/10
1. CotBP
2. AWE
3. OST
4. DMC
Fun, fast paced, totally sexy adventure story ( but not really a pirate story ).
What I liked:
-How fast it moved
-Angelica's sassiness
-The mermaid sequence
-The interactions between jack and barbossa, barbossa and groves, jack and gibbs, jack and angelica
-LOTS of little funny and silly parts throughout
-A lot more mature jokes which made it feel more grown up
What I didn't like ( as a movie ):
-too many sets...seemed like there were too many ideas all spliced together which made it feel a bit sloppy and jumpy
-severely underdeveloped new characters...even though most were done with at the end of the movie, I feel very few even had a proper introduction and no arc whatsoever. In the previous 3 you knew this guy and that guy and this movie just felt like a bunch of randoms...it seemed like they didn't know who to focus on and when. Even Jack seemed sporadic and not as dynamic as he has been.
- Blackbeard was incredibly weak in character dynamic. He was acted well, looked awesome, but they didn't give him nearly enough to work with to be as EPIC as he could have been. Little dialogue and hardly any of importance. No development. No interesting background. No interesting exit. Very predictable. Again, this was the writers error, not Ian's. I feel he could've done tons with this character.
- The best characters were the ones you already knew and it seemed to be written with that planned. That being said, why the EFF did they bring back Groves, make him totally lame, give him NO good lines and then the worst write-off ever conceived? I can't even fathom the thought process behind this. It would've been better if he were in the palace escape scene and just said " HE DID plan that out! I definitely saw it!!! " and then not appeared again. As Travis said, if we were at the El Cap where he hosted, we would have had the urge to yell to him " YOU BROUGHT US HERE FOR NOTHING!!! "
- Zombies were pointless and shouldn't have been called zombies. And how does Bb even use them effectively when he only has two ( at least, two that I noticed )?
- Spaniards were pointless...absolutely pointless. They're seen here and there, trash the FoY and then leave. Wtf?
Pet peeves ( personal issues ):
- What was mentioned prior to the film about Blackbeard and VooDoo was almost non existent unless you connected it for yourself.
-THEY CUT THE RING DISCUSSION OUT...ugh.................the ONE thing that tied Jack and Angelica's history and story together more recently. Who cares about the freakin' lace? No one sees that or makes note of it. I bet most people didn't even know what it was when he pointed it out and had no idea what they were talking about.
- Angelica's costume is SO inconsistent.
- VERY dark ( in colour ) sequences
- Didn't notice the 3D at ALL. But I don't mind giving the PotC franchise some extra cash. Pirates, afterall. Gotta respect.
- No super piratey awesome line from Gibbs!
- sometimes a little TOO sexy...not sure how parents with children will feel... I knew there was a tango scene but didn't think it would be horizontal. :lol
Even though they tried to make it less convoluted, I feel the story was TOO simple. Here's where we're going and now we're there. Couple very minor roadbumps, overcome. It felt empty otherwise...the fight scenes were few and far between...and far-fetched. Almost too choreographed. It's almost as though they wanted to cater to a more mature audience with the tone of the movie and characters but at the same time tried to make it easy for kids to follow ( though I don't think the dialogue and accents would allow that, even I had a hard time hearing things at points ). They need to pick an audience and stick with that while creating the film from start to finish. CotBP was family friendly. DMC was silly but had darker tones. AWE was mature. OST had a juvenile story with a mature tone and characters...a very strange mix.
My biggest issue was the focus on what's happening here and there and the lack of use of the characters. They didn't have to be incredibly thought provoking, but even in a standalone movie, characters should be created, given an arc, give YOU something to invest in them for the duration. Not just moving set pieces.
Overall, I am quite underwhelmed but I'm seeing it again tomorrow anyways. I just feel like there was too much stuff decorating a simple line and some of those decorations were incredible ideas that could have been used in much more interesting, enticing, exciting and deeper ways.
I can't say I didn't like it 'cause I get a little flutter in my heart when I think about it. But I definitely can't say I loved it either. Going to try to view it with a clean slate ( even though it's almost impossible since I feel like the characters from the first three are/were my family and friends XD ) and maybe sit a bit further back, wear my contacts and take some tylenol and hope I don't have a headache. I think I may just be overtired from straining to get costumes done and perhaps my opinion will change once I sleep in good and late tomorrow.

Re: The Brethren Court OST Review Thread!
Personally I expected more (maybe from the trailers). One other thing which was a negative point on the movie, but does not concern the US version, was the German version of the movie. Unlike 1-3, this one had another dubbing voice for Jack... Normally it's the standard voice for Depp in almost every movie he appears, but Disney themself decided to change the standard voice in pirates 1-3. And for part 4, the actor wanted to much $$$, so they changed again to Depp's standard German voice.
But as I said, this point won't affect all of you US residents there
No more additions to Aelyn's comment, same opinion.

Mojo Turbo wrote:Where was the Mermaid slap and the Gibbs line, "now there's the Jack I know?"

Mermaid slap I figured would be just a trailer giggle...as soon as you saw how vicious those seaghouls got, there was NO WAY Jack was going to swim beside one and discuss their history. Even he wouldn't have survived that womans wrath. The Gibbs line, however, should've been in there. Anything Gibbs says is awesome.
I actually can't express how much I LOVED Jack flicking him on the nose. They are such good best friends!
So after sleeping on it, most of my previous points still stand but I can sum it up into two ( or three ).
I think the movie had a lot of greatness to it, I just have gripes with movies that have too many cutscenes, they always end up feeling sloppy and jumpy. I like to focus on something and what's happening, not feeling like the movie was made for those with ADHD. Again, I guess this relates back to how I mentioned it seems to be BUILT for kids, but MADE for adults... very strange.
It was a LOT of land adventure and very little seafaring. The parts that were on open water seemed small and insignificant due to the fast pacing. And there was very little actual fighting, more journeying. Which is cool, and different, but very unexpected.
...
And character development was incessantly lacking.
...
And what they did with Groves. HE DIDN'T EVEN GET A GOOD LAST LINE. I will NEVER forgive and get over this. Ever.
And now I have to go cut my hair so I have bangs for dressing up today!

Re: The Brethren Court OST Review Thread!
Groves hosted at El Cap? We arrived horribly late, did not have time to mingle or take pics with anyone, and was a bit stressed from being late maybe I missed him?aelyn000 wrote: ... Anyway my review...
I did not enjoy it as much as I had hoped, and I was really looking forward to it. I may have to watch it again to decide for certain but for me the rank is CotBP tied with DMC, and AWE tied with OST. I have a really hard time not getting a headache from 3d and the glasses never fit me properly.
I thought the movie overall was slow. Biggest thing for me was Bb was not bad booty enough. They didn't really explain or talk about rumors about him being maybe undead or with magical powers or use voodoo leading up to finally seeing him. Was it him that had powers or was it his sword, which seems like his sword since Barbossa had the same powers with Bb's sword at the end. But really I don't think anyone can compare with Davy Jones, or perhaps bc I am such a huge Bill Nighy fan. Bb just didn't seem scary or intimidating enough. He never killed anyone himself did he? or did I miss it? He always commands someone else to do it. Jones was much more unpredictable making him much more frightening to me.
I didn't care for Phillip's character but understand why he was there. Serena kills him at the end right? I got really tired by the end.
Also thought there were not enough fight scenes and that some were much too recycled. The fighting up in the rafters like in P1 at the blacksmiths shop. The two swords and three people give me this I'll take that tossing about in P2.
I know Jack's escapes are usually unbelievable but happen by chance, his escape from the palm tree was groanworthy. His best "escape" imo was on cannibal island.
What I did like:
Barbossa flask leg.
The end scene when Jack maroons Angelica. Those fake lines she feeds him are funny, and the I'm with child part was particularly funny.
The King's chubby face.
The Ponce de Leon Pirate ride room recreation, that was a fun treat to see. and how Barbossa mouths "Don't. touch. the. map!"

Maybe... and he gets to be a mer-man!
All she said was " I can save you. " and kissed him and brought him underwater where he would never drown...maybe the kiss of drowning invincibility overpowers previous injuries and they don't matter if you're underwater... who knows?
Saw it again tonight, I upgrade my score to 7.5 but still ranked 3rd. It was much more fun and popcorn fare seeing it again carefree. And for how poopy some of it is, the good and funny stuff is really good and really funny. I think I will always laugh at the Kings little thumbs up to Barbossa. What is with that?? We need a screen of it asap to use as an emoticon, methinks.
Oh, also realized however that I am also mad that they took out the tooth conversation between Jack and Teague. I hate that they made little dialogues for specific costume pieces that may be significant to costumers and then just took them all out of the movie. Not cool.
