Re: My COTBP Captain Jack Sparrow build
Thanks everyone. I wore my coat yesterday as I got invited to a pirate event at Tutbury castle by a reenactment group. Got shown how to use a sword properly and even got to do a bit of a sword fight in the show. Later I got to fire a flint lock pistol. What can I say, I loved it and I'm hooked. I've decided that i've got to get my own battle ready Captain jack sword and later I hope to get a firing flintlock too. Here a few pics from the day.

Thank you very much! I generally only post my photos up on FB and cosplay.com. But I will post some of the newest photos up this week. I should post them under this section of the forum right?
Cluey, Looks awesome! Also, great photos! Looks like that event was a lot of fun. I have been having one of my friends teach me how to sword fight, didn't get very far and I'm not very good at it, but I guess with practice I will get better

Awesome pics and it seemed to be a great event with a lot of fun ...
I just want to ask you, how did you apply the mixture of acrylic paint to the fabric? Did you use a brush or some kind of a spray-bottle ...?

Thanks.
Think your right, practice makes perfect. I was thrown in at the deep end, a quick lesson then out in front of the public. But still good fun can't wait to do it again.

I used a spray bottle, I applied it to small areas as a fine mist, then rubbed the fabric together to smudge it. You end up with very dirty hands by the end of it.

Re: My COTBP Captain Jack Sparrow build
if anyone has missed it, you need to go back and look at page 1, that is one of the best COTBP wigs I have seen!
Re: My COTBP Captain Jack Sparrow build
i think has to many dreadlocks.. should be less and more lose hair. also check the length .
Re: My COTBP Captain Jack Sparrow build
I had noticed my dredds are looking more prominent in photos lately, as you can see on page one there is normally more hair round the sides. I think with me wearing it to some out door events recently and it being a bit windy the dredds have worked there way to the front more and the lose hair has blown round the back and started to form its own large dredd lock under my plait. I noticed the knot of hair round the back at the weekend when packing it away, think it just needs a good brush to untangle it. should look better after I sort that out.

Nice costume cluey! Very nice to see someone w/ COTBP style since majority are now OST. Very simple, yet elegant
If you don't mind me asking how did you go about weathering/tarnishing your buttons? They look awesome and old.
And how do you like the fit of the coat with the size being a tad bit bigger? I'm thinking about getting one as a backup as I don't want to ruin the expensive coat.

Yea that happens with the wigs. Is your base wig human hair or synthetic? If it is synthetic, once you get that tangle out the wig hair will be a scraggly and dead looking, so if you can, I would suggest cutting the large mat/knot out and then sewing in wefts of human hair to replace the loose hair. This only works if you have other hair to cover the wefts, so you could sew in human hair wefts under the dreadlocks and probably where that knot was. That's what I did with my wig, and the hair doesn't tangle as bald, or if it does I can untangle it and re-style it easily.

How did you get the pleats on your coat to be so defined? Mine don't look like that. Did you add material to the coat or just iron it?

Thanks. Yeah I liked the less cluttered look of the COTBP Jack, I will prob do a later version of Jack at a later date but I'm in no rush, thinking I will wait till POTC5 comes out and see what his costume looks like in that first before I start buying new stuff.
Tarnishing the buttons took a little working out and takes a little time. I found that the best way was painting a button in malt vinegar and heating it in a soft yellow flame a little, then taking it out and painting on some more vinegar and heating in the flame again. Do this a few time then hold the button in the flame longer and it starts to darken all of a sudden and goes a tarnished dark brown. Takes a bit of practise. But it has to be a soft yellow/orange flame, I found the blue flame of a gas cooker to strong and didn't work at all. I used a bunsen burner to do mine.
The coat is a little large. I pinned mine together down the back seam, tried it on and moved the pins until it sat on my shoulders then I stitch it. I plan to have ago at taking in the sleaves at some point too.
Hope that helps

Thanks, yeah it's real hair. Brushed all the knots out today and it looks alot better. I also gave it a spray of hairspray to see if that helps.

I just ironed them in with the iron set to steam.
