Custom PRINTED OST waistcoat material
I should really be sewing and actually working on physical things rather than playing around in Photoshop... but if this turns out well, it will be a great alternative to us budgeteers who want the look but need our cash!
After having completed Angelica's waistcoat design for custom printing, I've decided to give Jack's a try... there's a lot of work to be done, though I already have the basic designs done up, they just need a lot of detailing and a 20 step texturizing process.
Here's a test piece I did with said process, it was a first go so it's not too hot, and in the end I'm hoping for something much more realistic. But it gives an idea of where it's headed...
and a glimpse at the shapes thrown together in a messy un-resized manner
I tried to post the pics via flickr... my computer/internet seems to be exploding at the moment and half my webpages won't open ( including my beloved photobucket ) so I linked them as well... hopefully you's can see one of these.
As with the Angelica fabric, I'll either send out the main image file for anyone interested to custom print on their own, or link to my spoonflower account once I'm able to sell designs I've uploaded.

Did you see Yordreem posted a sample pic of his fabric on ebay?

Re: Custom PRINTED OST waistcoat material
I've been in touch with a fabric printer lately regarding spandexy things for superhero suits. I'm considering printed OST fabric too, but also gonna see if i can get some actual embroidered fabric first

Re: Custom PRINTED OST waistcoat material
oi, that render is FAR superior to mine!!! LOL
BUT... do you plan on sharing or just keeping a personal project or reselling? I'd be interested in buying that render printed depending on the cost...the sellers that have the custom embroidered stuff is a bit high for my budget atm...

Yeah I know what you mean. It's a bit dear. I mean to actually HAVE embroidered fabric would be amazing, but I doubt I'll have the budget for it for a while, unless something magical falls into my lap, lol.
As for the file, I think I'm probably just gonna hold onto it, and sell the printed fabric if it's cost effective. We'll see what happens with it

blub blub blub. Still in the process of re-aligning it and going to play with the colours some more but I think it will look nice printed out on a shiny-ish fabric!

Re: Custom PRINTED OST waistcoat material
That looks like SMW's!!
Actual FG fabric:
Check the spoonflower swatch book, I think there is a shiny fabric...the silk crepe de chine may work.

Thanks! The lack of scale reference was really holding me back. Still, wish I could actually get hold of that heave ho FG fabric. If only they knew how much business they'd have just off that one type of fabric. Ah well.

Re: Custom PRINTED OST waistcoat material
Yeah I should have bought it when I found it!
It's gotta be out there...I can't believe that was the ONLY piece in existence!
Well some unknowing soul has a goldmine on their bed or hanging from a curtain rod!

Well, hopefully it just looks like the waistcoat fabric! LOL His is definitely the one we'll be buying when the funds allow it, though.
Thanks so much for the FG reference! Now I can adjust the sizing accordingly. =3 Much appreciated! And yes, spoonflower has a sateen and a silk. We're definitely going to have to rush this one so I think we're going to do the cheaper one which is the sateen. It's getting replaced in the future anyways so I'm just trying to keep this one as cost effective as possible.
I'm so glad this one didn't make me frustrated to the point of crying like that ridiculous paisley! I think I might re-do the embroidery texture though to have the lines running vertical. Thoughts??

Re: Custom PRINTED OST waistcoat material
Me too in regards to SMW's!
I would change the stitching. The guru fabric is heavier like silk dupioni.

Our attempt
Simon (Buttonit) hunted down the base fabric for ages and found a couple bits of silk- haven't been able to find anything else like it at all! After some scary dying, we spent a week in front of my embroidery machine, here is the result! Making it up this weekend.. photo will follow.
Wasn't that expensive to make up- unless you're charging for your own time! The thing is having the equipment.

Re: Custom PRINTED OST waistcoat material
You had the regular fabric, not the discontinued yardage from FABRIC GURU?!
Well it looks perfect.

The base fabric was actually a shot silk- which we dyed, spent ages matching threads for the embroidery, and embroidered on my fancy Bernina Aurora 440! The frame was only large enough to do one section of the pattern, so it took ages! I got Simon to do it- I'll make it, but bugger sitting in front of a machine for a week! When he want's something bad enough he gets it. You'll have to ask Simon about any more details about the design etc, I don't know how he did it- Magic I think!

Re: Custom PRINTED OST waistcoat material
Well, I took the leap. I edited my pattern to make it more colour-accurate and scale accurate, and got it printed on that satin crepe from Spoonflower as suggested. I should be receiving the printed fabric May 4th. Let's hope for the best!

Yes, cleaning up the pattern and then digitising it into stitch format was a bit of a time consuming task on it's own before the mammoth embroidering task.
Here is part of the final piece. I could probably choose a different background which would print out quite well.
The actual screen used fabric isn't a single colour silk - it's a mixture of navy and light purple, so it's very difficult to dye it to the right colour unless you start with something that has the navy in it start with. The fabric isn't nearly as navy as it looks. Overall it has the look of a much paler blue colour, although because it's a shot silk it will look different from different angles. I spent days and days in London looking for a fabric that looked even close to the original (even without the embroidery) without much luck at all.
Re: Custom PRINTED OST waistcoat material
This is how my pattern turned out. Hopefully Spoonflower will match the colour well. Spent ages deciding on the shades of navy and gold that I wanted. The moment I get the fabric in hand, you can bet that I'll have a photo of it for you guys.

Re: Custom PRINTED OST waistcoat material
WOW. I mean, WOW. And this is why Simon is one of the best looking Jack's out there, the rat b@stard!
Seriously though, well done mate. That patience and attention to detail blows my mind.
And as for the print, callmemilo, that render is brilliant!
I'm hugely jealous. Interestingly however... I know a guy who claims to know where one can still get the "actual" fabric... and supposedly his information comes directly from Penny Rose... At present, that is all I know about it. I'm dubious of the results, being somewhat skeptical by nature about any claims made regarding this fabric, but I'm also extremely hopeful...

Re: Custom PRINTED OST waistcoat material
well originally Chad Evett said on RPF
but there was never a follow up, I sent him a PM on Facebok just now....so we shall see
I have a mutual friend with Penny Rose, and I might be able to track the stuff down in actuality, although I'll tell you now I doubt we'll find it in those colors. It may need to be Altered, but I will see what I can do.

Dang and blast.
Like I said, dubious. When I talked to him last, he seemed pretty certain. Oh well, the hunt continues!
