Re: Jack Sparrow COMPLETE! New PHOTOS page 8.
For a quick build I'd say you nailed it mate! Wouldn't expect any less from you, of course.
The coat is a beauty...did I here rumor it might appear on Magnoli Clothiers at some point?
I know time was of the essence but weathering the coat would bring it all home... And darken the breeches a bit.
Otherwise, perfect!!

Thanks for all the kind words... from you guys, it means a lot! The two big changes I'm going to make are to tea-stain my pants darker (should help make them more brown as well) and add Pecard dressing to the entire boot to darken and age them. I don't think I'll distress the coat, only because I like recycling my costume pieces for other things and this coat would do very well for any generic 18th C gentleman's outfit. Next time I may add baby powder to dusty the coat up for Jack since this is easily removable afterwards.
Here are some more shots:
...when the rum is gone, Jack drinks Coke:
And yes, the frock coat and waistcoat will be added to my site later today, most likely.
Kind regards,
Magnoli

Good point. Then yes, a bit of baby poweder and perhaps some fullers earth should do nicely to give that weathered feel. I've used baby powder myself for those outfits I have that at times need to look a bit worn but other times need to look brand spanking new. Works well enough for the effect without the permanency...

Re: Jack Sparrow COMPLETE! New PHOTOS page 8.
Jack's scalp is now proudly on display among some other noble heads:
After seeing my photos, I decided the boots still looked way too clean, so I decided to go crazy with pecard leather dressing on one of the boots:
Much better, in my opinion... now for the left boot.
Lastly, here is an example of hy I didn't want to do any permanent distressing to my frock and waistcoat. Matched with my Holmes shirt and ascot, you've got an excellent 18th Century gentleman's outfit:

Magnoli

Re: Jack Sparrow COMPLETE! New PHOTOS page 8.
looks amazing for the time used very well done! but yes the coat could use some distressing what i did was take some extra material from my build and actually ratted it up and sewed it to my coat so it looks very frayed and beat up but does not actually effect the integrity of the coat itself. Also on a little note i would sarkin your eyes a bit more too but you can pull off the jack look very well!

Just got a new Anamaria buckle from Shylaah at the RPF:
The quality is excellent and details look spot on to me. Here is the original:
Thanks Shylaah!

Re: Jack Sparrow COMPLETE! New PHOTOS page 8.
your past pictures show you had an AM buckle, what were you using before?
Re: Jack Sparrow COMPLETE! New PHOTOS page 8.
I previously had an OST version of the AM buckle. I'm not overly concerned about mixing and matching, but I do prefer the look of the DMC/OST version. And since the original source was discovered, I couldn't resist swapping them out!
Re: Jack Sparrow COMPLETE! New PHOTOS page 8.
so I know Captain Venno on KTTC found the source, so Shylaah got one from him and then you got one from her?
Re: Jack Sparrow COMPLETE! New PHOTOS page 8.
This is what Shylaah posted at the RPF:
So, that's about all I know. I just traded Shylaah for another prop, so not sure what these are being sold for.
I found out from a friend in the UK who just happened to visit the shop and see them. I didn't really get many of the particulars. He lives in Blyth, so I guess he found them there or nearby? He said they were about 4 GBP, less if you bought in bulk and then they were even cheaper.....He did say the guy at the shop told him they supplied that buckle to POTC, but you know, people can say anything??

Re: Jack Sparrow COMPLETE! New PHOTOS page 8.
Well 4 GBP is only about $6.25. I'm really happy with this buckle and got a good deal from Shylaah.
Re: Jack Sparrow COMPLETE! New PHOTOS page 8.
Yeah, Shylaah rocks. And looks like the buckle is perfect! I too prefer the old version of that one.
Re: Jack Sparrow COMPLETE! New PHOTOS page 8.
Well... I finally started working on an updated version of my baldric. When sorting out my original costume, I got some of the embossed vinyl and a spare buckle, but ran out of time so I ended up using the plain leather baldric you see above.
But, like all of us, I can't leave well enough alone, so here's my build for a more accurate baldric:
First, I start with the long strip of embossed vinyl and two pieces of genuine leather (thin enough to sew easily and fold, but thick enough to give some body to the vinyl, which is really thin):
Facing the vinyl and leather together, I sew a strip along one edge:
Repeating the process on the other side results in this:
After folding the leather around each side and gluing it down (and left to dry under a weight):
This shot shows the cross section well so you can see how the french binding works:
A few holes for the buckle and voila! One belt done:

Re: Jack Sparrow COMPLETE! New PHOTOS page 8.
Now, the buckle end of the baldric is the easiest part of this (all straight lines, plain cut edges). The longer belt is the same process except it has a finished, curved tip. So, for this, instead two straight pieces of leather, I cut a single, long "U" shaped piece that was sewn all at once:
I miscalculated the correct shape of this piece (the inside of the "U" should be the same size and shape as the tip of the vinyl). Because of this, I had to trim some of the inside of one side of the "U" to get it to fit correctly. This resulted in one side of the leather being narrower than the other. No big deal, since these are folded and glued one on top of the other. It just meant the belt will have a little less weight/body than I wanted.
The tricky part with doing the tip is that you've got to cut a bunch of piece out of the leather so the french braiding can wrap around properly:
I didn't get a shot of the finished tip by itself, but you can see this below in the finished product shots.

Re: Jack Sparrow COMPLETE! New PHOTOS page 8.
For the frog, I used my leather baldric as a pattern, cut the vinyl to match, then traced it onto the leather to get the french binding part:
The outside was stitched in much the same way as the belt with the tip:
The inside part was a bit more tricky as I wanted to do it as a one piece, so there would be no seam at the inner point.
Again, I had to cut a bunch of triangle out of the leather to get the french roll to work properly. Once it had all been folded over and glued down:
I added another piece of leather to the back to give it extra body and to give it a more finished appearance:
After punching a few holes and adding the hardware, I've got a new baldric!
Kind regards,
Magnoli

Amazing Tutorial (now added to the wiki) with that addition - there isn't one part of the Jack Costume that doesn't have a tutorial on the wiki!

WOW! Amazing tutorial!!! Your baldric came out absolutely amazing! I can't say I've ever seen a baldric tutorial like Mojo said, so I'm sure quite a few people will find this helpful!
Re: Jack Sparrow COMPLETE! New PHOTOS page 8.
Thanks guys! Like I said to Mojo, I'm happy to be able to give something back to this community. This board and Mojo's wiki has been invaluable in building this outfit. I hope my info will be of use to some people...

Re: Jack Sparrow COMPLETE! New PHOTOS page 8.
I just got my Jack Sparrow shirt from Pauliepoos and, even though it a really great shirt, I was amazed how similar it is to the one I tea stained above. So, anyone wanting a cheaper alternative (and easier to get since I know Paulette is very busy), I'd highly recommend Museum Replicas Early Renaissance Shirt:
http://www.museumreplicas.com/p-358-early-renaissance-shirt.aspx
All you need to do is add some strings to the front, remove the velcro from the cuffs (and add a button and button hole if you really want) and tea stain it.

Re: Jack Sparrow COMPLETE! New PHOTOS page 8.
I would have to say I would take Paulette's shirt any day over the link posted. She has more pleats in the shoulders and wrist cuff area whereas the Renn shirt has very little (that are visible in the picture). Also her shirt has a deeper ""V" in the neckline as does Jack's shirt.
