Jack's Teeth tutorial
hey everyone i am in the process of creating more comfortable teeth for my jack. I originally used grillz from a Halloween store but they were very uncomfortable. so i have made a mold of my teeth using sculpy clay from walmart and baked it then made the teeth from plastic resin from hobby lobby and now i am in the process of making the teeth either from dental or nail acrylic or just plastic. has anyone done this process before? I have not seen it done yet but if i figure out the best way it will be cheep and effective

This sounds like a great idea, and I'd love to see pics documenting your progress! It seems like the fake costume teeth run either super cheap and uncomfortable, or prohibitively "pay for your dentist's next vacation" expensive. A mid-range DIY option would be perfect!

Re: Jack's Teeth tutorial
Totally agreed! I can't wait to see how this turns out! And maybe if it comes out really, really well, you might be inclined to do a tutorial for us all...? Maybe?
Re: Jack's Teeth tutorial
yea im really trying to figure this out the clay worked really well you dont need a tray or anything to do the impression that was simple. but now im trying to work out the ration of gold and sliver to the pieces ill work up a tutorial if this works

Re: Jack's Teeth tutorial
Very cool! Though personally I'd probably just paint them once the actual tooth caps are formed.
Re: Jack's Teeth tutorial
I have some 14kt gold leaf that could be stuck on them. Failing that go to some party store and get some of the fake plastic tooth caps..they'd do the job and not cost anything really

Re: Jack's Teeth tutorial
I've done some thinking of how to do this as well in the recent past. I actually have a brother that is a dentist and one of these days I swear I'm going to talk him into teaching me how to do a lot of the dental lab work he does. All just for Jack!
You should check out The Effects Lab forum if you haven't already, mainly the tutorials section. What you did sounds a lot like what this guy did...

There are also some threads on there that may help you in your quest...

Johnny had caps put in place but I believe a lot of the other actors on the Pirates set had vaccuform teeth in place. This guy did his own version of zombie teeth that might give you some tips as well...

Re: Jack's Teeth tutorial
I posted a while back that I use cut up fake nails in gold and silver for my teeth.....all you need is a set and some dental adhesive..... viola.....$10 later and some pretty convincing Jack teeth.
Re: Jack's Teeth tutorial

Re: Jack's Teeth tutorial
Hey, it looks better than some of the costume shop options I've seen. Sone questions spring to mind...
Are they comfortable enough?
My guess is that eating with 'em is a no-no, but how about drinking (rum or otherwise)?
What did you use to cut them down to size?
Any problems removing 'em?

Re: Jack's Teeth tutorial
1.) actually quite comfortable.
2.) No eating..... (keeps me weight down though) drink with a straw if at all possible.....keeps the teeth on better
3.) Cut 'em with a pair of sharpened scissors, smaller the better as far as scissors go.
4.) Nope not at all they come of pretty easy, not a big fan of the dental adhesive taste, just my preference, but it's not really that bad...

Re: Jack's Teeth tutorial
And as for painting the tooth molds once they're created, I'm not 100% positive of how best to do it, but I do know that most nail polish becomes non-toxic when dry. So if you could find a metalic gold shade, that might work (although I've looked, and had trouble finding a really good one.) I've used one of those "gold leaf" pens before for something like this, and it seemed to work fine.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/62420962@N03/5684769567/in/photostream/ ok this is alittle bit of what ive been doing. in flicker go back wards to the some of the work. ive kind of made a retainer this is just a test the one shot of it in my mouth is gold tooth paint and is very rough texture my final version will be smooth

Re: Jack's Teeth tutorial
Well... put it this way... I myself used the Kylon 18k. gold leaf pen... and I'm not dead
I read the warnings, and basically all it says is "danger flammable!" and "vapor harmful."

Re: Jack's Teeth tutorial

Re: Jack's Teeth tutorial
I didn't actually, but I definitely will next time. I think that's probably the best way to make sure you don't get yourself poisoned if the paint really is toxic, haha. But hey, like I said, I'm still here
Re: Jack's Teeth tutorial
thanks mate i am very excited with these i will have pics soon the are very low profile and pretty much match up with the right line with my other teeth so they do not stick down too far and they are thin and don't affect speech much

*Runs around with a lighter* lol but i'm seriously thinking of trying that trick with the fake nails..gold, silver seems to work! better than getting my own removed. although I do intend to get two of the top gold ones done and two lower silvers in the not-so-distant-future
