PROP: Mao Kun Map

I was wondering if anyone had a spare mao kun map they aren't using? I would love one to add to my props for Jack

I saw this Search for the Fountain of Youth Book at Target, Inside are four 8.5 x 11 full color reprints of the Mao Kun Map. That you have to remove and assemble to make a full sized map. (well not "full sized")

It's a good size for less than $5. You could cut it into strips and make a cheap bamboo reproduction

If you buy this book - you'll end up with a much bigger map.

Target still had the placemats in stock. Working on 2 versions of the map (Disney outlet and FoY booklet bases)


Still have more to cut on the left map and both backs to do. Then weathering.

If I get the chance, maybe I'll get some autographs on the left one, then retire it. It's made of flimsy cardstock paper so it would only survive a few gigs, the canvas one is gonna be my beat up prop.

I was going to print a really large sized copy of the net and then stick that to a bamboo blind (cut down)

RIGHT MAP: Canvas zizzle map. Followed the map mod tutorial to a T. Acme replica characters on back.
LEFT MAP: FoY book map inserts. Closer to actual size. Screen accurate colors, location, character on back.

Wow, the poster inserts really look good... I'm going to have to pick that book up today and try that mod myself. I also have 2 of the toy maps lying around, so I figure I may as well mod those as well. When you use those, do you take that fabric backing off to make it sit better?

Bamboo blinds did not work for me. They fell apart after I was almost finished with the first map...AS YOU CAN SEE

Calligraphy before "antiquing"

The calligraphy I had originally painted on the map backing that fell apart came from the original movie map. It was such a hassle to repaint, that I had my own message to a friend translated into the characters which I repainted ( again) by hand.
Next, antiquing with more stain, oil paint and sanding

My thoughts exactly...About a year ago! Its maddening mate, trust me!

I tried mesh and also thought about using a smaller blind or placemat cut into circles/rings and glueing it to the printed canvas circle/rings. That way, when lined up with the regular bamboo slats of the map it would roll easily. With the added reinforcement of the smaller slats, sticks (whatever) the canvas wouldl not curl from being rolled and unrolled.

If you do decide to make a functional map, please post! I'd love to see your progress!!

Does anyone have any good (high resolution) images of the map section that Jack has in OST?

I'm trying to make my own map, but I want one which has the fountain of youth on it. All of the big, good quality images I've seen are of the earlier AWE map (that does not have the fountain of youth on it).

I am going to be making the version of the map, seen in OST, ( the map with the fountain of youth that Gibb's ends up destroying.) printed on canvas, anyone have an approximation on size of this prop?

I'm doing the equivalent of name dropping here, but I actually did one of the scenes with the map in the last film, so got to hold it. It's fairly sturdy stuff. From memory it was around 16-18 inches in diameter, but it was well over a year ago so I might be completely wrong. I could probably grab a still from the film and work out a scale as I don't think my hands have grown much in that time!
