'Pirates 5' Script Delivered to Disney But Johnny Depp Wants to 'Hold Off for a Bit' (Exclusive)
3:35 PM 5/4/2011 by Matthew Belloni
http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/pirates-5-script-delivered-disney-185357
The actor tells THR that the movies need to remain "special."
Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides doesn't his U.S. theaters until May 20. But screenwriter Terry Rossio has just turned in his script for a planned fifth installment in Disney's most lucrative film franchise.
Rossio tells THR that the still-untitled script -- his first penned without Ted Elliot, who collaborated on the first four Pirates scripts -- was delivered to Disney this past weekend. It's the initial step in putting together the key creative pieces for another Pirates film. Disney would like another installment, given the $3 billion in worldwide grosses for the first three films and the likely huge returns for the fourth movie, the first to be released in 3D.
Producer Jerry Bruckheimer has said he's in to make a fifth Pirates. And sources say Disney has made overtures to Rob Marshall, who took over directing duties on Pirates 4 from Gore Verbinski, who helmed the first three pictures, to return for another go-round (though no deal is in place for Marshall).
But they key question mark is star Johnny Depp. Will he sign on for a fifth installment in the franchise?
In an interview published in the current issue of The Hollywood Reporter magazine, Depp says he hasn't seen the new Rossio screenplay but he isn't opposed to reprising his iconic Jack Sparrow character yet again.
"It boils down to story, script and filmmaker," Depp tells THR. But the actor isn't clamoring to jump back into the puffy shirt until a little time has passed after Pirates 4. He didn't relish the brutal schedule that saw him making Pirates 2 and Pirates 3 back-to-back in order to meet studio-mandated release dates in summer 2006 and 2007, respectively.
"It's not something where I would say, 'Let's shoot it next month to get it out by Christmas 2012,'" he says. "We should hold off for a bit. They should be special, just like they are special to me."
Depp's full interview, as well as the complete backstory on the making of Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, are available in THR's special Cannes Film Festival issue, on newsstands now.

Re: NEWS for Pirates 5 "Dead Men Tell No Tales" [WARNING] may contain spoilers
With the current hyperspeed at which Hollywood operates these days, I'd have to agree with Johnny on holding off for a bit. There needs to be more than a year in between sequels in my opinion. I look at other movies that have sequels and they usually have about a two year break between the two, which I think is perfect (Ironman, Transformers, X-men, just to name a few). It gives them time to regroup, time to buildup hype for the movie, and allows the current movie to not be overshadowed by it's sequel. Although some movies have pulled off a good sequel really quickly, but usually they seemed rushed.
I hate how most movies now come out and are on DVD within a few months from opening night. Most movies are still in the dollar/second run theaters when they come out on DVD. It's a main factor of why I don't go to the movies as often anymore, there's too many to see, movie prices have gone way up in past years and by the time I get around to wanting to see it in the theater, too late, it's on DVD already. I feel like I'd have to go to a movie within the first week of release or I'm not going to be able to see it.

Depp Officially In Talks For Pirates 5
Yes, look shocked...
06 July 2011 | Written by James White | Source: The Wrap
Given the success of the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise so far – including the fact that On Stranger Tides just sailed across the $1 billion mark at the global box office – it was only a matter of time before Disney started to turn up the heat on another instalment. The script has been underway for a while now, and though Pirates anchor Johnny Depp has said he wants to take a little time in between movies again, he’s apparently now in the early stages of a deal to return for the fifth outing.
Yes, it should really surprise no one, but before the fourth film arrived, Depp was talking up how it would depend on the script and how much he wanted to let the series rest in dry dock to let audiences breathe. But despite fairly scathing reviews for Stranger Tides, it’s become yet another cash cow, so naturally work is really getting started for more Sparrow time.
According to The Wrap, a rough draft of the script is in (from, we assume, franchise veteran Terry Rossio, since he was the one hired in January to start work on it, minus his usual writing partner Ted Elliot) and producer Jerry Bruckheimer and co are said to have been in fevered meetings getting it to a point where Depp will say yes. From the sounds of this, he’s happy enough to at least start figuring out a deal.
As to when the movie itself will actually shoot? That’s anyone’s guess right now, since Depp will be busy on The Lone Ranger for a while this year and may still stick to the idea that he’ll wait a couple of years before setting sail again. Bet Disney and Bruckheimer will be trying to convince him to step aboard as soon as possible…

Johnny Depp Almost Ready To Sign For ‘Pirates Of The Caribbean 5;’ Has Made $350 Million From Franchise
Published on July 5th, 2011
Written by: Germain Lussier
Even though I more or less was bored out of my mind during Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, I’d show up for a fifth movie in a second. There’s just something inherently exciting about that world and that character. And despite the film being a critical flop (33% on Rotten Tomatoes) Disney knows I’m not the only one. On Stranger Tides is a bonafide, worldwide box office phenomenon that just became the seventh highest grossing film in international history. That – and the fact that he’s reportedly made $350 million off the four films – is probably why, despite some earlier reports that he wanted to wait, Johnny Depp is now close to signing a deal to star in Pirates of the Caribbean 5. Read more after the jump.
The Wrap first reported Depp’s latest intentions but, even if it doesn’t happen soon, his signing is inevitable. He’s made $350 million off the four movies so far (so says another story by The Wrap) and a script for the film written by Terry Rossio has been done for a few months. There is no way, after the continued box office success of On Stranger Tides and Depp’s personal windfall, that the two wouldn’t continue the franchise.
Plus, On Stranger Tides obviously ended with the set up for a sequel (spoiler coming) as after the credits it showed Angelica (Penelope Cruz) finding the Jack Sparrow voodoo doll on the small deserted island.
No one would officially comment on the progress, according to The Wrap. As for Depp himself, he isn’t available for a while as he’s currently shooting Dark Shadows with Tim Burton and then most likely moving on to Jerry Bruckheimer’s other Disney tentpole, The Lone Ranger, scheduled for release December 21, 2012. That means the earliest we’d see Captain Jack again would be 2013. Then there’s the little issue that a director has not yet been signed. There was a rumored short list a few weeks back but that also seems like a pipe dream with Rob Marshall likely to return.
What do you make of all this? Do you think there’s a way to salvage the franchise or were you a fan of On Stranger Tides and looking forward to seeing the next page in the saga?

NEWS for Pirates 5
In October 2011, Jerry Bruckheimer confirmed that they are working on a script for Pirates 5.
In an interview, Kevin McNally stated that a summer 2012 production start was possible.
Because of the financial success of On Stranger Tides, the film's director Rob Marshall may return to direct.

In an interview, Kevin McNally stated that a summer 2012 production start was possible.
Kevin McNally: I think the intention is to shoot another Pirates film next summer. Whether that will happen or not, I don't know. I hope so. I quite need a holiday in Hawaii at the end of my theater run, so it would work out perfectly for me. I think we have every intention of doing that next year. I think two years between each film is very good for the audience. When we did 2 and 3 within a year between them, I think that was probably a bit soon. So, if we did one next year, it would probably come out in 2013. That would be good.

Well if in fact that is the Black Pearl 2.0 being built in Alabama, and is suppose to be finished by the summer, then Kevin McNally was right...

All I can say is that OST made over $1 billion dollars so profit is no longer an issue.
I think that Disney should pay what the actors deserve and bring back the original Black Pearl crew including Ragetti, Pintel, Cotton, Mr. Cotton's parrot (or not since we now know Mr. Cotton can speak i.e. from Wedlocked), Ana Maria, Pirate Marty, etc.
Might as well go all out considering that the pirates universe is a money maker!

Surprise! Johnny Depp Likely Signing for 'Pirates of the Caribbean 5'
by Ethan Anderton
July 5, 2011
Source: The Wrap
Johnny Depp as Jack Sparrow
Though On Stranger Tides, the fourth film in the high seas Pirates of the Caribbean franchise merely struck me as a lame sequel doing nothing but treading water in familiar territory, the rest of the world has pushed the film over $1 billion in box office and it currently sits at #7 on the all-time world box office leaders chart. Therefore, it's no surprise that The Wrap reports Johnny Depp is already close to signing a deal to start in a fifth film for the Disney theme park franchise. We've been hearing about a fifth and even sixth film in the series since before On Stranger Tides came out, but this makes it even more official.
Back in December cast and crew had been told to set aside a chunk of time in the future to shoot a fifth and sixth installment in the series back-to-back, but it's not clear if that's still the plan with Depp only close to signing on for the fifth film. Back in May when On Stranger Tides hit theaters producer Jerry Bruckheimer said, "Hopefully, if this one does well, (Depp) will want to come back and play the character again. But it’s going to depend on the screenplay. It always does. He’s maniacal about not wanting to disappoint his audience.” Well, the film has done well, but here's hoping the script delivers a little more quality adventure this time around.

AYE!!!
Storywise, they'll have to work in some sort of survival story methinks. It sounded like all were lost when Blackbeard took the Pearl...at least that's how Barbossa made it sound.
At least Pintel and Ragetti. Can't beat them for comic relief.

Well, Cotton's Parrot is definitely needed as Cotton can't speak. True, he spoke at Wedlocked, but according to the short itself, that was a prequel to CotBP.Capn_Jack_Savvy wrote:I think that Disney should pay what the actors deserve and bring back the original Black Pearl crew including Ragetti, Pintel, Cotton, Mr. Cotton's parrot (or not since we now know Mr. Cotton can speak i.e. from Wedlocked), Ana Maria, Pirate Marty, etc.
Oh that should be simple...the fact that Jack the Monkey and Cotton's Parrot(hard to see, but it's him), were stuck in the bottle grants us the slight chance that the Pearl's crew are stuck in the bottle as well. Assuming of course if they're able to use that idea...BroadSword wrote:Storywise, they'll have to work in some sort of survival story methinks. ETA:
Though I will say, mysteriously enough, I did get a VERY trustworthy inside tip or two regarding the structure of a particular story that started in OST. Depending on how much someone knew on said story, this may or may not be obvious.
But because I actually want to make this happen, I'm keeping me blabber shut ...at least in public

Well, in that case, I think I might say a teeny bit or two of what I was told.
But be warned...information may or may not be obvious!
Ok, this isn't exactly what's written(as that should at least be private ), but I summarized what I knew in small notes...
- Spoiler:
- Here's what should be known from OST:
1. Barbossa absolutely did not know that the Pearl was on the QAR. So it's safe to assume that the "Taken, not lost." was suppose to be taken figuratively...meaning his statement "...she be sunk nonetheless." Barbossa's actual knowledge regarding the Pearl.
2. Jack knows nothing regarding the Sword of Triton. Despite what happened in the Mutiny scene, Jack never knowledgeable of the sword compared to Barbossa, who obviously knew much of its power.
Regarding the fifth movie...
Jack and Barbossa are conning the other...with both the Black Pearl and the Sword with the sapphire of Triton into play of said con.
Re: NEWS for Pirates 5 "Dead Men Tell No Tales" [WARNING] may contain spoilers
Depp just signed for another movie, purportedly his "next"...and it ain't Pirates.
Re: NEWS for Pirates 5 "Dead Men Tell No Tales" [WARNING] may contain spoilers
quote from Rob Marshall on movie 5 script
Terry [Rossio] is writing it and he’s working incredibly hard and he did a draft and rethought it all and started working on it again. You want to make sure you are asking the audience to come back to see an exciting adventure and it has to reach that caliber, and if not there’s no reason to do it. I know Johnny feels the same way: He needs to see a script, but he would be happy — if it’s the right script — to put that hat and sword back on.
