Yeah, I was watching his progress over on KttC. Talk about an amazing project. I wish someone would just manufacture them out of wood and metal. Not firing ones, mind you, just wood-and-metal replicas like Denix makes.

Aye! And most probably it won't cost a billion dollars like the MR... My Denix pistol was $40, metal and wood, spring firing mechanism... Very cool, quite happy with it! And I'm willing to pay much more for a replica of Jack's pistol of the same kind.Captain McCool wrote:Yeah, I was watching his progress over on KttC. Talk about an amazing project. I always wondered why aren't there such replicas, most of the pirate pistols from POTC are super cool! And it's not like they are copyrighted by Disney or something, they are historical weapons, yes?
Maby we should give Denix the idea... Who nows, they might just take on it.

It is called merchandise licensing. A company picks up the official contract to produce Disney licensed merchandise. The "likeness" to that of Jack's equipment is the intellectual property held by Disney. Even Sword and Stone got in trouble for producing/sellling Jack Sparrow swords and he made them for the movie!!!! Now they are called Spack Jarrows!!!!

Disney can't claim to have any rights on these weapons, they have rights on the "Jack Sparrow" and "Pirates of the Caribbean" logos, names and stuff. Those weapons existed long before Jack Sparrow, Disney or movies existed. So you certainly can't sell them as "Jack Sparrow's sword" or "Jack Sparrow's pistol", but you can sell them as "Perry London flintlock", "Pirate sword" etc.

Quite true. Though I know Denix (or a company like them) got licensing for Cutthroat Island replicas, because the pistol I generally use for Jack is actually a licensed Cutthroat Island movie pistol. They stopped making them, naturally, since the movie wasn't exactly what you'd call a smash hit, heh. Still, if they can't get a Disney licsense, they might as well manufacture them as historical repros. Wish they would.

Albeit true Disney cannot claim rights if sold under "Pirate Flintlock" but they can submit a C&D for the likeness of the weapon especially if any of the terms under JD, Bruckheimer, or Disney lawyers feel they are being robbed of the likeness. More so if the seller is profiting from the sale of said likeness.

I just don't really see how that's feasable, considering the pistols used in the films are actual historical pieces. Disney may have bought a couple of them, but others just like them do exist, and have existed since the mid 1700's.
And as for Jinkxed Jack's post, what I meant was a wood and metal replica. But those knockoff plastic ones are pretty excellent for what they are.

Agreed. Disney can't do anything even if they wanted to. They could if we were talking about things THEY designed and created... like the compass. But something they took and used in their movies? No. It's not like they can stop people from making brown leather tricorns just because Jack wears one... same for the weapons, clothing... almost everything Jack wears.
I sent an email to Denix. Just because. And not that I'm expecting anything to happen at all, but they answered and said they sincerely thank me for my suggestions and that they "take good note of them and will study the possibilities to develop these items in the future". So at least I know I tried. And that they are polite, haha. And I don't see any reason why they wouldn't make them, they sell a lot much less attractive weapons than the ones used in POTC.
And finally on topic, I've been watching this thread on KTTC, it's really awesome! I'm thinking about making a side plate for my pistol...
There!

Re: Zizzle Conversion - how to build a real flintlock
I seen his tutorial yesterday so I immediately purchased a zizzle on ebay. My neighbor has wwll industrial lathes and mills and is currently producing long range (1,000) shooting. So im thinking about casting the lock and trigger, but cap etc. and having my neighbor manufacture the stock and barrel. If it turns out and looks good, perhaps I will produce more than one
