In the market for a vest...
So, as it says..I am looking for a vest. I have no idea who to get it from. My CB has served me well, and if I don't make a decision, it should continue to serve me well. I'd just like to make the full OST jump, since I've got the wig...Who should I get a vest from?
Re: In the market for a vest...
So you want to know who to get an OST vest from?
I think in OST - you have 2 choices - SA and expensive and "needs a lot of modding" and cheap
http://jacksparrowcostuming.wikispaces.com/OST+Variances
SM Pillowfort makes an incredibly screen accurate waistcoat - expensive
Chad Evett will make you a custom accurate waistcoat - expensive
Sith Empire sells a reasonably close facsimile - moderately expensive
Cosplayying has a waistcoat that could be modified - cheap
Costumebase has a waistcoat that could work with some modifications- cheap
Hellocosplay has a waistcoat with a close fabric, but the pattern they use seems a bit short - cheap

Thanks Mojo. I think there are a few of us looking to make this leap, and this thread might help.
I was thinking I could go with the CB, but the back is so short and the chest panels are so wide..I'd want mine fitted, so I'm leaning toward Empire, if he'll give me a deal, but his back is a little off too...as well as the placement of the pocket flaps.
Ugh. I feel like it's on a scale of EXPENSIVE to NOT WORTH IT. I just dont wanna have to deal with all the moddingg... I feel like the CB can be weathered up nice and good to look like what it's supposed to, but I've never weathered flocking. I feel like the weathering wouldn't take all the way through...but we are pioneering this, I suppose, since no one's done this yet, right?
Re: In the market for a vest...
i've been asking him for photos and i'm in correspondence with him. what was his offer to you? I wonder if I could butter him up with the fact that his wares would be on display in the portland area quite often..
Re: In the market for a vest...
he said $210 for his OST vest..... still a lot, but a okay deal
reminds me I'm do for a visit haha

Out of the three "expensive" options I think Sith's fabric is probably a better overall match than the other two (they all have issues with them though). SM Pillowfort's fabric doesn't too it for me. That said I wouldn't get a Sith Empire waistcoat as the build quality is awful. However if you can get the fabric from him then get someone to make it I'd probably go with that option.
I think when mojo says screen accurate he means the embroidery is based on the screen used pattern. None of the patterns are an exact match the the screen one, and neither are any of the base fabrics used.
Re: In the market for a vest...
It all comes down to what you can afford, what you're willing to settle for, and what is available. As has been said, there is something about each of the available fabrics that is a bit off and it comes down to personal choice. When I got mine, the facbric from SM Pillowfort was the only option as both ACME and Yordreem were out of the fabric at the time. The SM P fabric is a bit shiny and bright (still beautiful though) right out of the box. However a bit of weathering and "breaking in" and I"m very, very pleased with it. To my eye, it looks almost spot on. Maybe a little bright, but heave ho close. And yes, it was cotly but well worth it in my opinion. I see potential in the Empire fabric as well, though.
Here's a few shots of my SM P fabric OST vest:
For me, since I strive to be more "Jackurate" than screen accurate, coming very very close to SA so as not to be noticable to all but the hardened JS fans is good enough for me.

Re: In the market for a vest...
I'm only commenting on what I've seen. I'm fortunate enough to know what the screen one looks like first hand and have also seen the Pillowfort first hand. Pictures can be misleading anyway - I mean some people can even make the ACME fabric look the right colour with the right lighting, and I've seen that one up close!
Re: In the market for a vest...
uh, capt jag that last pic needs to be your icon instead of that doll.... not the "doll" in your last picture with the tankard, the Jack doll.
Absolutely correct - for our little community - NOTHING is SA off the rack for the most part until you mod it.

Hmm, I don't see a "doll" in his last photo. I just see two large......OH!!! You mean BEHIND! Ok, now I see her. Man, I need to stop thinking with my pants and start using my brain.
You should also do something about that hairy chest, Jag.

Absolutely. And most people don't have that first hand experience. Lighting in the films and in real life are going to obviously differ anyway, so ultimately it comes down to what looks right to each individual.
For me, the Pillowfort fabric is close enough, it's sturdy enough and at the time was one of the few options available. I do like the look from the pics of the new Empire fabric, but am very, very happy with what I have. However, each of us is going to have his preferences.
Again allow me to reiterate how refreshing it is to discuss such things where everyone may not agree but are able to do so without squabbling like cuttlefish as has happened on some other forums...
By the way - digging the new avatar! Nice!!

I keep it in case I ever have to make rope again since my back is now bald...
Besides, what can I say, my lady freinds like it.

Yeah, but I like the doll... Both of 'em...
Re: In the market for a vest...
I like SM's pattern as well as Empire, but alas for me my hand painted pattern works for right now (even though it's a tad too big ) but still I agree that it's fun that we are happy with being Jacks even though we may not all be SA Jacks.

What is awful about Empire's build quality? I don't recall seeing anyone with his vests..do his wares not live up to his photos?

I was just going on the pictures - top stitching round the edges, pocket flaps not matching the pattern etc. It just seems a shame to spend that much on fabric and get an item that looks so shoddily made. You might as well pay someone that little bit extra to make it properly.
Re: In the market for a vest...
i never noticed that stuff. the pattern on the pockets line up? the stitching doesnt bother me. dreads cover that
Re: In the market for a vest...
so empire's offered me a vest and sash for $300, shipping included. take the deal or no?
Re: In the market for a vest...
its only what... a $22 savings? It's up to you - saving money is saving money.
Re: In the market for a vest...
At least it's something right? If you want it get it. When you get it (if you get it) flaunt it.

Re: In the market for a vest...
Seriously? Okay, that's just bizarre. I know that vest. It's the vest Chad Evett (a fellow Denverite, incidentally) made for Brandon Hillock. He hand-embroidered the entire bloody thing, and what's more, he only JUST finished it, probably less than a month ago. Why on earth is it being sold on eBay already? Is it Brandon himself who's selling it?
Re: In the market for a vest...
I have a YorDreem OST vest for sale, make me an offer. It's closer than these others discussed.....
