upnorthjack wrote:has anyone ever watched the tv show Frasier? good show. Taking place in seattle wa, you see marty ( frasier and niles father) and he is your quintessential old pop. but for some reason, Frasier and Niles speak in a very Cosmopolitan accent. very proper and elegant, but they were still american. i hate when movies like the patriot (mel gibson) use a very modern day dialect. i can imagine during the days of the revolution, that a thick accent of old world english, and dutch and other european accents would be present and would have leaked in . just like up here in minnesota, where many eastern european and scandinavians settled. Yeah, we carry out the O's dreadfully, but if you ever listen to a swede or norwegian, they do it too. it has stuck around for a long time. Minnes-ooooota lol
As much as I love Frasier, it contains some of the worst screen abominations of English accents since Dick Van Dyke all those years ago. Ironically enough the actor who plays Marty is actually British although being from these shores I can't comment on his American accent. The actress playing Daphne is from around the same part of England as me and her Mancunian (Manchester) accent is awful, although at least compared to the rest of her siblings who crop up from time to time it's at least an attempt at one. Most Americans actors in it playing English seem to just go for Cock-er-ney or the uber posh, regardless of where in England they're from.
Re: Acting the Part, the walk, the linger, the voice and what NOT to do
That's really interesting. I had no idea John Mahoney was English. However, it says in his Wikipedia article that he picked up an American accent while serving in the U.S. Army, so that would be why it's so dead-on. Seriously, I'd have never known. It's also noteworthy that I didn't realize there was anything whatsoever wrong with Daphne's accent.
Re: Acting the Part, the walk, the linger, the voice and what NOT to do
i pictured daphne being welsch or welsh or, oh bloody hell i cant spell this morning. as with everything, people really do create their own accents in groups. cowboys do it. western accents arent southern, they are western, . (that was just one example) but yeah. john mahoney an english man. who knew. but how bout pikey?, is pikey not common? lol Pikeys. i fu@%@!$ hate pikeys. theyre not irish, theyre not english. theyre fu@#$%! pikeys!

Got complimented on my accent by another Englishwoman today. I was pretty proud I mentioned to her that I had been discussing the accent with a few folks online and that we couldn't really place it exactly, and she said something to the effect of, "well it's a Johnny Depp accent," haha.
How do you beat the heat?!
Well today I mowed the lawn in my wig sash and baldric....just to test out my new guy-liner, while this new stuff is awesome I was wondering how do you my fellow Jacks' "Beat the Heat"?

Dress for success, mate. Sometimes the hat and the coat can't be worn to a gig, and sometimes the wig and baldric can't be worn while landscaping
Re: Acting the Part, the walk, the linger, the voice and what NOT to do
it's called man-scaping.....
wait - what are we talking about?

Haha... wow... yeah...
Soooooo... as for beating the heat... well, honestly you just get used to it after a while, if you do it a lot. But here are a few tips:
1) KEEP HYDRATED! I can't stress this enough.
2) If you really want to you can put a wet rag underneath your wig.
3) You can drench your bandana too, if you so choose.
4) Don't wear the coat and hat (as mentioned above). You'd be surprised at the difference it makes just to leave off the hat.
5) Make sure that all your costume pieces are made of 100% natural fibers, because synthetics don't breathe. Lightweight linen is best. Canvas - even cotton canvas - can be sweltering at times (I know this from experience).
And really that's about it. Stay in the shade, I s'pose. But for me, I've got to wear this in 100+ degree weather at the Colorado Renaissance festival in the summer, and I've basically just learned to deal. You're going to be hot, and there's not much else to be done.

I think the realy honest answer is....You can't.

Ah yes - those days of Ren Fests in full Tudor and Elizabethan courtier outfits have taught me to deal with Jack's gear in the heat. At least with Jack I can have my shirt open in the front for some relief...
Like the man says, you just have to learn to deal with it, and make sure you stay hydrated. Oh, and those natural fibers make a HUGE difference...
Re: Acting the Part, the walk, the linger, the voice and what NOT to do
Dress accordingly. If it is inland Pirate Faire go Jack sans hat and frock coat. If it is a Pirate Event on the beach I sometimes go as Trapped On An Island I'm Governor of Jack".
Get ready in an air conditioned environment! Hydrate before, during, and after Jack! Except do you know how freakin' difficult it is to get out of those drop front breeches?
Wear smudge proof / water proof / non running make up and for any prosthesis be sure to use a type of barrier so your beard or pirate P or peg leg is not falling off.

Aye, it be a pesky thing when the spirit gum gives out on yer peg leg
Re: Acting the Part, the walk, the linger, the voice and what NOT to do
I beat the heat by not wearing a hat or coat....
Business Cards?
Today, while at an event, I was asked for a business card! I was incredibly flattered!! Especially because I was asked by one of the lead performers who apparently organizes various events. Unfortunately, I don't have any!! I gave him my Facebook, but now that I've been asked, I don't think it would be a bad idea to get some. So what Jacks on here have business cards? What do they look like? When do you give them out? And who do you give them to?
Thanks,
Neo

Re: Acting the Part, the walk, the linger, the voice and what NOT to do
I just have stupid ones printed off a computer, it has the jack flag logo and just my email addy - not even my name. If they are serious.. they will write, if not.. then they don't need my name. (ha ha)
uh.. what?
At my most recent Jack thing, the Pirate Festival..I had a few patrons come up to me and say the strangest things.
The pretty standard 'I haven't seen OST or any pirates movie after the first' "Why are you blonde?"
"Why are you wearing 2 belts?"
"Captain Jack Black!"
And then..
"You got the look down good, but after the first movie, his vest was brown. Betcha didn't know that did ya? Yep...a lot of people didn't notice, but I did. I'm real big into Jack Sparrow."
I honestly..didn't know how to respond to that, as me or as Jack. My costumer and prop brain just went FZZTT and I just looked at the guy, confused..cause, well I was.

well, there's that...but thats to be expected. I dress up as Jack enough to know that most people just won't call me Jack Sparrow.
Re: Acting the Part, the walk, the linger, the voice and what NOT to do
Onboard the Disney Wonder! Young teenage girl yells to me, "Hey it's Jack Sparrow!" I turn around with a play disgust look on my face and reply, "Captain....CAPTAIN Jack Sparrow! There should be a CAPTAIN in there somewhere!" Her mom looks at her daughter and says, "Well that was rather rude wasn't it?" I chuckled and in the corner of my eye the daughter was LHAO!!! The mom was totally clueless!!!
