How do you cope with heckles?
Heckles not shackles however one can lead to the other if you have patients such as myself. Whats the best way to deal with heckles from adults or teens? Never been heckled by a child and if so would probably would do the old "Thats not very nice" line. Been heckled during stand-up before but thats an entirely adult environment and Jack doesnt curse!
Just a thought, cheers folks.

Typically I throw it right back at them with a witty retort bashing their intelligence or originality, but it's all about DELIVERY. You can't let them immediately know you're giving them sh*t back. They should only realize it after a good 5 minutes of hard thinking.

Delivery you say? That pleases me I was trying out a friends wig with what little costume I have the other day and a well presented young man (I.e. grey tracksuit, hood up) said "Captain Jack Swallows" I said "As does your mum" but apparently thats to be frowned upon. Being Jack is hard sometimes >_< lol

Actually, that was great in my book, especially when dealing with jackasses. It's especially effective when dealing with groups of twenty somethings and one thinks a comment like that is going to make him seem cooler to his friends, just turn it around on him. I'll have to remember that one for the convention coming up this weekend. "Swallows" is something we constantly run in to with heckles.

Kinda put me off for the day, but still. If stuff like that isnt too far then thats cool. We're mad over-here, say one thing in jest and it can easily turn into a court case :-s

Re: Acting the Part, the walk, the linger, the voice and what NOT to do
This topic is so foreign to me. We've never been heckled whether at the movies, mall or restaurant to coffee shop... Yes, Travis had a streak where he wore it basically everywhere. We've gotten stares but they are usually followed by smiles and compliments or requests for pictures. Maybe Canadians really are nicer?? Lol sorry to hear about you guys getting heckled. The people that are 'too cool' to appreciate it have no idea what they're missing out on. Dress up never gets boring!!
Like Johnny has said, growing old is inevitable, but you should never have to grow up.
So, we are the lucky ones!!!

To be honest, there's always gonna be idiots out there who have something (ahem) "witty" to say, but I tend to give em one of Jack's snearing glances, if I can't think of anything clever to say back, and continue on. Cos for every dick out there, there's a good 50 people that absolutely love what we do. And they're what makes doing all this worth while.

The Orange Street Fair was interesting. Got a lot of people wanting photos. Later that evening after people had a few beers the heckling started.

Re: Acting the Part, the walk, the linger, the voice and what NOT to do
99% of the time if you can ignore it.. do so.. However, there comes a time and a place when you have to respond... sometimes it's just people poking fun and sometimes folks can be down right mean..
Heckle "Hey it's Captain Jack Black!"
Response: "Where?! I owe him money..." run toward the person "Tell him I went that way" then promptly go the other direction
Heckle "Hey! You're not Johnny Depp!" for me the response is
Response "I should certainly hope not, otherwise I'm wearing the wrong clothes.." while looking myself over as if I'm not sure what I'm wearing
Also never underestimate the power of a random line from the film.
"That's the sort of thinking, got us into this mess in the first place"
"Is it now?"
"You smell funny"
"No, I don't have the face for tentacles"
"complications arose, ensued, were overcome"
"Gentlemen, I wash my hands of this weirdness" -my favorite when I'm just gonna walk away.
"do you think this wise boy?"
"That doesn't sound like me."
"The deepest circle of Hell is reserved for betrayers and mutiniers"
"Send this pestilent, cowhearted, yeasty codpiece to the brig"
"i want my jar of dirt"
Don't be afraid to use Jack's lexicon in varying situations...
You are never ALWAYS going to be able to think of a good retort but, you don't need to. You're Captain Jack for the sake of all things holy. YOU ARE a response!

Another one I heard is someone saying "are you real?" I comment back "no, I am animatronic."

Same. When you start writing 'like' its a little worrying..when you start saying like (Like I heard a couple girls say today) then thats down right depressing. lol

Re: Acting the Part, the walk, the linger, the voice and what NOT to do
Good thread topic!
I largely agree with everything Bird said! My favorite movie line is simply "you smell funny!" said with that childish "Jack" air about you. That's the thing, you can say a lot of weird, and sometimes even slightly "rude" stuff as Jack, but if you give it enough of an air of absurdity, it USUALLY won't offend. Just be careful.
The "swallows" comment is exceedingly common, and my general response (if I deign to respond at all) is "no, no, you're thinking of my cousin - lovely singing voice - eunuch."
Basically, I find that if you just grin mischievously, act like you're in on some joke they're not getting, and move on with life as if you're totally unaffected, the hecklers will lose much of their gusto. They're trying to kill your buzz, and if you nonchalantly brush off these petty attempts, you will have won. Even if it really did upset you (and I'm tellin' ya, there's always some jerk who knows just where to hit you so it hurts), it's best to pretend it didn't. Fake it 'til you make it, as they say. The less you act affected by the hecklers, the less you actually will be affected by them. Which brings us right back around to the best piece of advice given here: Just ignore it if you can.

Also, I love your "wearing the wrong clothes" line, bird! Brilliant!
If someone says something like that, or "is it really you?" or "you don't look like him!" I generally say something to the effect of, "I should hope I look like me, otherwise, there's no telling who I might look like."

The "Jaccent" (A Question for You English Gents)
Okay, so this isn't exactly a Jack COSTUMING question, but...
After a short debate with my lovely lass the other night, I have begun to think a little more about Jack's accent. I have always striven (er... strived?) to replicate what Johnny did on screen as closely as possible, and I've even been complimented by a Brit or two upon occasion for doing it well (of which I am inordinately proud). We all know Depp has pretty cosmopolitan tastes for an American, and has even been described upon more than one occasion as an "anglophile." So you'd think his accent would be pretty spot-on, right?
And yet, the more I consider it, the more I think his accent is a little... well, strange. It definitely sounds "English" to my (very American) ear, but then, I can't really say what specific category of English accent it falls into. It's honestly not like any real English accent I can remember hearing.
So here's what I'm wondering:
Is Jack's accent close to any specific REAL English accent? Or is it more... "English-esque?" If it's just "English-esque," what do you believe Johnny is doing with it and why? If it IS some form of real accent, what category would you say it falls under?
Ultimately, I'm mostly curious about how Depp screws it up. I mean, he IS American, and he's got to slip sometimes, even if his accent is mostly dead-on. So what is it? Is it all wrong? Or is it just parts? And furthermore, do any of the actual Englishmen (and possibly women) on this board have any suggestion to us Yanks about how better to impersonate one of them?

Excellent question! I'll have to pester her to get on here more
Re: Acting the Part, the walk, the linger, the voice and what NOT to do
It's definitely not pure English, or an accent anyone really has - it's more of a well spoken cockney, rather like Keith Richards I suppose. The voice is actually a little all over the place which is why it's quite hard to nail, especially in CotBP, where at times there is even a bit of an Australian twang to certain bits of it.
Re: Acting the Part, the walk, the linger, the voice and what NOT to do
I'd say Essex nearer London area for that accent. He has a touch of Romford about his accent and I find myself often saying the 'ey, and savvy in that accent which is closer to my birth place.
A little trick is to think of BlackBeard, Morgan, even Nelson on tv as they came from Rural areas. Henry Morgan came from the area in south(east)'wales that my family lived in prompting an almost Cornish dialect, Blackbeard from the country and Nelson from Norfolk so would have both had a very pronounced country accent.
The further east you go (South east) accents change. Suffolk and Sussex both are mild country but Essex, and then London swing into the English Cockney accent which is a lot like Jacks. So, i'm safely saying Essex-nearer London but not London itsself as it's not heavy enough. It's smoother and more defined and he tends to annunciate a lot more. Sounds silly but i've been studying language and tones and have fond some interesting results it's possible he could even be from Kent.
