Re: Acting the Part, the walk, the linger, the voice and what NOT to do
Haha, right?
The "r" thing is funny really. A lot of English speaking people don't pronounce their "r" sounds very well. You'll find that in New York, New Jersey, and really a lot of the American East Coast. As well as the American South, in some cases. Not to mention various places in the British Isles, Australia, New Zealand, etc. But this is mainly when the "r" is in the middle or at the end of a word - never in the beginning, obviously. However, there definitely is that tendency in some folks to add that additional "r" to the end of a word ending in a vowel (most noteably "a"). Especially when that word is followed up by a word beginning in another vowel sound. For instance, in Curse of the Black Pearl, Jack clearly says to Gibbs in the tavern, "That's why I know what BarbossaR is up to," very clearly adding that additional "r" at the end. I feel like this is probably because of having two "a" sounds, back to back, so the "r" sound is added artificially so as to break up the double-vowel-sound. KnowwhatImean?

blueyedjack wrote:Unfortunatly, the we are portrayed to other country is often as posh snobs, where as most english, like myself, don't add the 'r' sound but the a is defently promanent. One big difference I have noticed with the english accent is we pronounce 'T's more than other accents when they are in the middle of a word like 'compuTer' or 'baTTery' (pronounced batchry in england).
It's funny you should mention the thing about the "T's." I've been thinking about that a lot lately. It's true, we Americans almost never pronounce our "t" sounds fully. They ususally come out as "d" sounds instead. Not sure why, since I feel it gives our accent a decidedly lazy feel.
And I agree. There definitely is an unfortunate stereotype of "upper-crust snobbiness" out there about the English. Which is just ludicrous really, when you think of it.

Just been into town to watch my friends band perform. People took the piss out of their costumes etc but ya know what its made me realize, it aint your problem, it's theirs. 99% will enjoy you thoroughly. 1% will try and act like they don't in order to impress the other chimps.
let them.
let them.

We also thought of as being too common sounding. Went to New York when I was twelve and spoke to a guy in a military surplus store, he said I sounded like Little Lord Forntloy. Dunno who that is but hey ho.
In all truth..I sound a touch like a farmer so i've been told. Then again we tend to pick up accents as humans, for instance a guy from Virginia who lived with mein college for two years ended up sounding more like Jack due to the cross of accents..funny ol'world innit? lol

This all reminds me of when me and my friend were costuming as Doctor Who at a public event last halloween and a large group of lads thought it would be funny to take my friends hat and my friend not being to happy went after the hat and the lads started to beat the living crap out of him so I had to step in to try and stop it. To cut a long story short we ended up in Casualty for the night and my friend had a broken jaw and we both had a lot of bruising. Although it didn't really knock my confidence, my friend is only just begining to costume properly again, it really shuck him up. I've managed to convince him to costume with me to another public event next Saturday. I'll be going as Capt Jack Sparrow and He'll be going as just a general pirate. Despite last halloweens events, I really can't wait for next saturday

That was terrible that someone would beat up a pirate. Just like at the Dodger game. Even at Disneyland the characters have someone watching over them. I hope that thug got arrested.

Unfortunatly the cops came round my house a few weeks back to tell me they had to drop the case due to lack of evidence, as if the x-rays of my friends broken jaw was'nt evidence

Mate I got mugged once and the bastards stole broke my finger just trying to get the emerald ring off. You have to embrace pain and use that as a weapon in itself. The more I get hurt by someone the angrier I get and stop feeling pain, shoved this guys face into a wall several times but his friend got away leaving me on the floor lol
I hate people sometimes, when I look at kids/my little sister I often wish that they'll never lose that innocence we once had and they won't, in effect, grow up.

Acting the Part, the walk, the linger, the voice and what NOT to do
Since playing Jack this past Saturday, it seems that some of the facial expressions and gestures have lingered just a bit. I noticed myself continuing to copy his mannerisms while talking with some of my co-workers today!
Anyone else have a similar experience, or am I the only one whose costuming disorder has begun to turn into a full-blown identity crisis?!

EGADS YES! All my friends tell me I "do Jack" sometimes when I'm totally not meaning to, and that it's really slightly unsettling, haha. It was especially bad when I was working the local ren faire, because I was doing it two days a week for 8 straight weeks (and this year I will be doing it again, so God help me). I'd be in the supermarket and pass the aisle I wanted, then do a whole "Jack" double-take, and swoosh around, spinning on my heel to head in the other direction before I even knew what I was doing! The worst part for me is the voice though. Often when I'm backstage or the faire has closed for the day I am bombarded with people saying "dude, the beer is in the pickup truck!" which is basically ren-faire-slang for, "The show's over, stop doing that!"
Re: Acting the Part, the walk, the linger, the voice and what NOT to do
Hahahaha man, the facial expressions are the worst. I can say that they have officially become part of my normal everyday err..expression routine.

Re: Acting the Part, the walk, the linger, the voice and what NOT to do
If I think about my own personal "nomal" mannerisms, I feel like they are actually just picked up from other people as I've gone through life. In fact I think a lot of how we act comes from what we see others do. I look at the many different groups of friends I had in high school and we would in general act very similarly, laugh at the same things, make fun of things in the same way, etc. Our personalities to me seem to be just one giant combination of everthing we've come into contact with.
I remember when I lived in Louisiana for a couple of years. Being from idaho, towards the end of my stay there, when I would talk to my sister back home, she would tell me that some of the words and phrases I would say sounded like a southern accent. I didn't even realize it, but I had picked up a slight "southern drawl" lol
So I guess doing Jack enough in your life, it just becomes part of you. I say just let it happen, it might give you some good stories too.

Like monkey see monkey do
Another thing is how people will categorize you even if you was like this, did these, sounded like him before we ever saw him on screen. People say "your trying to be like Jack Sparrow" what do you say to that? for instance when I was 15 til 18-19 I had long hair and wore beads in it and a couple lucky charms. Stopped it for a bit and am only just starting it again. between AWE and OST -nothing- now its advertised you get that line "Your trying to be like-"
'tis odd, people do confuse me

Jack lingers long enough to get awkward for me, always.

Actually I have to say that this is totally the case with me as well. Especially Jack's "dubios" face. Like the "what's that smell?" or "I feel sullied and unusual" face, haha. That's the one that really lingers with me, even if I haven't donned the wig in months!

Yep same, and that weird little face he does whilst singing to davey jones about the contents of a certain jar, gun gets run out and just like..puckers up and frowns. Thats my "huh? wtf" face..animated faces make for laughs though and if you enjoy making people laugh..keep em

Don't get grossed out but tried it, highly impractical and the dangles just get in the way :p that was with old wig that somehow ended up in the bath and turned out like one giant knot.

I always seem to find my self doing jack like stuff, I think scince I've grown up with the films (cotbp came out when i was 11/12) growing up with jack I seem to have been heavily influenced by him. Yes some people do get annoyed by it but my friends love it, at the end of the day it's the way I am and it's what most people love about me, besides it keeps everyone entertained

Mate... you are monstrously inappropriate... and it amuses me to no end!

has anyone ever watched the tv show Frasier? good show. Taking place in seattle wa, you see marty ( frasier and niles father) and he is your quintessential old pop. but for some reason, Frasier and Niles speak in a very Cosmopolitan accent. very proper and elegant, but they were still american. i hate when movies like the patriot (mel gibson) use a very modern day dialect. i can imagine during the days of the revolution, that a thick accent of old world english, and dutch and other european accents would be present and would have leaked in . just like up here in minnesota, where many eastern european and scandinavians settled. Yeah, we carry out the O's dreadfully, but if you ever listen to a swede or norwegian, they do it too. it has stuck around for a long time. Minnes-ooooota lol
