I tried to add an used, brighter look - the best example for the chocolate boots and their colour are the escape-scenes in London in "On stranger tides".
So they are really dark brown, not light brown? Are they so dark they are more verging on black?
I am after a light brown type colour...
So did you actually manage to lighten up your boots? And if so, how did you go about achieving this??
Thanks heaps mate!!

Re: CABoot advice
By the way, are you saying your chocolate boots (when they were brand new) were fairly accurate in colour to the boots seen in the 'escape scenes' in OST?
If so, chocolate Caboots could be a good option then?...
Sooo confused on what colour to get...

Re: CABoot advice
That is exactly the problem with screen accuracy for many costume parts!
For example the bandana: its colour changes from red to pink to orange to grey...
And the colour of the boots are different in the four movies. In the first movie they seem to be dark brown, in the second and third movie they are obvious the brighter tan ones. And in the last movie they are dark brown again. But within every movie they also vary in their colour ( Johnny had "wet boots" for scenes with water, he had "hero boots" etc) ... There are a lot of useful posts here in this forum.
So it depends on your choice, what style you want to create for your costume?!
Cobp and Ost are the dark brown boots;
Dmc and Awe are the tan ones heavily weathered.
My A1-chocolate boots are very close to the colour of "Ost". The colour of my boots, seen in the pictures above, is alright and nearly "lifelike"/"true-to-life"... maybe a bit brighter by using the flashlight...
Out of the box they are dark brown suede leather. But they are new - and they look new. So I rubbed the suede leather and the sole with sandpaper. Just imitated the abrasion on those boots. Then I used costume-dirt. Some kind of wet mud, which dries up to matte, anthracite/grey dirt and tarnishes the brown leather.
I tried "Dirty Down-Spray" in ash-blond to set brighter spots, but the spray didn't have any effect on the brown suede leather. I couldn't see any result... so I brushed and sanded the boots and used this costume-mud, which is also used for movie-costumes to weather them...

Awesome mate! Thanks for the weathering/lightening tips! Yeah if I was to choose chocolate boots, and they turn out to be too dark, I want to be able to lighten them.
How much do you reckon you were able to lighten your boots overall? Did it have a massive effect or only a little bit of an effect?
Thanks heaps for your help and advice!

Re: CABoot advice
Just an idea, could you perhaps also try just leaving them out in the sun to lighten (sun bleach) and weather them??

Re: CABoot advice
Yeah, I also left them a few hours in the sun - but the warmth seemed to melt the glue at the soles of the boots! So not a good idea... and I couldn't see an effect at all in the colour.
With weathering, sanding etc. I think the boots went "20% brighter/lighter"...if I can define it that way...
After all, it depends on what type of movie-boots you're aiming for. I'm satisfied, when comparing my boots to Cotbp and Ost ... Watching the second and third movie, I'm thinking, the tan ones with heavy weathering would have been the right choice...
And finally, in some close-ups in the London-escape-scenes (for example on the table in front of the King), the movie boots are slightly a bit darker than my boots right now. And in other scenes, the movie boots seem to be brighter again.... I think, it depends on the camera-filters they use, too.
More important than choosing chocolate or tan boots, is the weathering you have to apply on both of them...

Thanks heaps, great advice! When you say the boots in the second and third movies were tan but heavily weathered, do you mean they weathered the tan ones a lot to make them darker or lighter?
I'm most likely after the darker look seen in COTBP and OST. After all, my costume is OST at the moment...

Re: CABoot advice
Yes exactly. The tan boots have to be darkened a lot. Using brown colour to "get rid off" this yellow look. I think, going with the chocolate boots will not need so much weathering.

Re: CABoot advice
OK now ... this forum has helped me a lot with all questions regarding my Jack costume and "Brethren Court" has become my BIBLE of costuming ... so I´want to help you, too ...my pirate mate ...
Therefore I went to my "costume room", got the boots out of the box and made some pics in the german daylight ... especially for you mate.
I hope, my pictures are going to be a needful information and help for your decision:
And please keep in mind: I´ve worn these boots ONLY two times (you may see the yellow/tan and still new sole); in total maybe 10 or 12 hours. The rest is weathering ...

Thank you so very much mate! I really appreciate it! This is a great help!
Your boots look great! And I love the colour. I wonder if you can make the pics any bigger so I can see all the details?...
I think you've done a great job of weathering. Say if I was to go the chocolate colour route, do you think it's possible to weather them so that they end up being even lighter in colour than yours? I love the look of yours, but I still think I'd like a bit lighter brown overall...
Thanks again mate! This is helping me a lot towards making my decision...

Re: CABoot advice
Hm... I think, if you want a lighter brown at all, then you have to go the other way.
Choose the tan ones and weather them heavily with brown, grey and black. My chocolate boots are heavily weathered right now - in my opinion - and I don't think, that they will become a lot brighter/lighter with more mud, dirt, sanding etc.

Hmmm, did you use some kind of mud you can buy for costume weathering purposes, or did you just use actual mud and dirt etc?
Did the dirty down spray do much/help much?

Re: CABoot advice
It's special synthetic dirt for costume weathering ("patin-a-wax")
No, like I said before: ash-blond dirty down spray did no effect on dark brown suede.

Thanks! Wouldn't the synthetic dirt/wax make them darker rather than lighter??...

No the synthetic mud/dirt dries up into matte grey and is brighter than brown. Just have a look at my pics.

Cheers!

Thanks! I'll have a look around online. What's the actual product called and brand name?

Re: CABoot advice
It's called "patin mud". You can switch his website into english language; there's a button on the top left side.
He works for german TV-productions and movies. You'll find a lot of useful information and examples of his work on his website.
And then you'll know, which product creates which result etc.

Re: CABoot advice
Hey all,
For those who have boots or who know what the screen used boots had, can anyone tell me how wide the cuffs on the boots are? At the bottom of the cuff at the widest point. I'm trying to determine how wide the cuff should be so that the boot looks right and balanced...
Thanks heaps!
