Affixing the Dreaded Dreads!! Empty Affixing the Dreaded Dreads!!

Post  Blade Savvy Tue Nov 19, 2013 3:15 am

I have scoured the various threads (no pun intended! Laughing ) and my question is this...how to affix (and probably where) the dreads into a base wig without doubling the size of your noggin!

For the back/sides, are most people sewing them in below the bandana line ie they sit in a ring around the wig in line with the bottom of the bandana (hope that makes some sense! No )

Grateful for any advice to a very confusing question (it's been a loooooooooooong day!)

Thanks Mojo, I did read the article and studied where the dreads were affixed. I just couldn't see how to do it (especially with 30 dreads) and not end up with a HUUUUUge head Laughing

I will keep trying before going firm !

Do you happen to know what thread Jack Savvy is using to sew them in? Is is hair weave thread??

Grateful as always.

Oi! Use heavy gauge thread like they use to sew heavy fabric. Go with black. The best advice is to sew the end of the dread into the liner (elastic piece or mesh liner). Insert the dread into the wig when it is turned inside out that way the end is hidden under the hair or liner. Just take about 3-4 turns on the dread, add a little super glue to hold the thread, and take 3-4 loops on the wig. Tie off. If your dread tapers off at the end you are tying to your wig the better that way it looks more natural. Attaching and placement will vary from wig to wig and the style of wig. For me it was just look at all the pics I could find of Depp in his wig including top, left, right, back, close ups and got to town. Dread placement won't be exact so you have to estimate unless you can get you hands on the screen used wig which some us do not have the benefit of doing so.

Besides my write up on the wiki are old and were more like "guidelines" anyway. I have improved my technique since 2006!

Extremely grateful your Lordship! One of your comments has confirmed (I think) one thing for me though, use of single end dreads is the better option to reduce bulk! Starting to make sense to me now!

As for technique, think my wife wants me to improve mine... Shocked

Thank you again for the great advice.

you can't really help getting a huge head, but if it's that bad, consider the size of your dreads: they should be around the size of your fingers, no larger than your thumb.

Starting on version 2 of mine. Learned a few things after the first wig.  Got a human hair blend as the base for this one (MUCH easier to deal with).  I'm going to try a braid-in technique for some of the dreads. There are quite a few youtube vids on this.  Wish me luck!

How many dreads total are there in the COTBP version wig? How many on each side, the back, and in the back braid? Thanks.
