Jack make-up - Skin Illustrator palattes and whatnot...
So I was perusing the websites, trying to decide between (finally) getting one of the Pirate Palette sets (I'm leaning towards the Pirates 3 set as I think that has more colors I would use). As we all know, they carry a hefty price tag.
Up to now I haven't used any of the actual PPI sets. I had gotten some other type that I had absolutely no luck with - the colors just wouldn't activate no matter what I tried. I even tried buying a second set to see if they were defective in some way but had no luck there either (I think they were only around $20 or so per set) so I am assuming they just sucked. You get what you pay for and all...
Anyway, I had also tried some bottles of liguid alcohol based makeup that I got on clearance somewhere, but the closest they had to a "tan" color is a bit too orange. If I'm not very careful in putting it on I end up looking like an Oompa Loompa... The other problem is that they run a bit when I sweat so that doesn't work out to well for my neck and chest. Again, they were not overly expensive but worked better than the crappy dried palattes that I had. Problem is, they are no longer available and I'm almost out. With gigs coming up almost every weekend these days I really need to get something that is easy to work with, stays on and looks real.
So, I ask for any input/advice anyone out there cares to share. These are the products I am currently looking at:
Skin Illustrator palettes at FX Warehouse (Pirates 3 set)
There are also two Mathew Mungle palettes such as this one that are the same price but have twice as many colors. I just wonder if they work as well.
I also came across these Skin Illustrator Glazing Sprays. It says they are water based, but that you need to use a remover to take them off so I am wondering how well they work and how well they stay on when sweating.
Thoughts/advice/opinions?

makeup issues.
First of all I envy you lot that can afford Ve's pirate pallet. I cannot and never will be getting it, so I bought some theatrical stuff that gives me a tan(ner) look, and not that orange-y look bronzer gives me. . That being said, For some reason I'm not feeling that jack is as super tan as people make him out to be . He seems more.... sun kissed.... and dirty... as opposed to having a dark tan. Am I wrong to think that?

You have to remember that the film makeup is designed to deal with different issues than we would be. It needs to look good under studio lights and what it looks like face to face is unimportant, so long as the end result is good. I think the key is to end up looking natural, whatever way you do it! Even with the Skin Illustrator stuff it's easy to over or underdo it. The best way, with whatever you do is to just to small amounts at a time and layer it up.

Bear up, lad, for there is a solution. As a long time Jack, I just never could shell out the $75 for the Pirate Pallette. I've tried many, many different things. Then I picked up a 2 oz liquid Skin Illustrator from FX Warehouse the other week for about $22 plus shipping. I got the Cedar Brown, and highly dilute it with the 99% alcohol. A little goes a LONG way, so it will last a good while and it looks good. And it's only $22. Plus shipping. Gives you that tan but not "Hollywood Tan" (sorry George Hamilton) tan. Looks very natural and best of all, it stays on and doesn't rub off on my clothes. Very happy with it, and since I didn't need all the other colors in the Pirate Palette it was perfect. And since it was only $22, plus shipping, it was perfect.
Check it out here: Skin Illustrator Airbrush Makeup
Now, the Cedar Brown right from the bottle is waaaay to dark. But, if you use just a wee bit mixed with alcohol on a makeup sponge, a little is all you need and it looks good. Build it up gradually and you wont' need much to end up with a good, natural looking tan. You could go with a lighter shade to start, but then would need more and go through it quicker. Oh, and did I mention it's only $22? Plus shipping?
As for Jack's actual taness, it's going to very from set to set and lighting to lighting, but in reality if you think of people who are out in the sun, and are dark complected to begin with, they are usually pretty tan. I"ve spent a lot of time in some port cities, and the fishermen, merchant sailors and dockhands are all pretty dark.
NOTE: The pic in my avatar is before I bought said makeup. New pics to follow soon I hope...

Simon, what kind of makeup do you use to get the look you have? Always looks great.
Cheers!
