My wife's inspired Pirate for Pirate Texas RenFest
So we are going to do an inspired pirate... nothing to copy, just totally go with found items and see what happens. Hancock fabric was having a sale, so we picked up a lot of the materials.
1st thing - the pattern
Simplicity 3677 pattern on sale was $1.99
We are going for the bottom left picture - she already has a peasant blouse that I will tea dye, then we are going to fill the dress in the front with a long floor skirt and fun fabrics.
It won't be "scarlet" but it will be red.

The Fabric
This is the main yardage for the bodice and sides... along with some trim, I am not sure where she is putting that...
And this is some "fun fabric" she is thinking about using in "clumps" on her hips....
She has an old periwinkle skirt from a wedding. It's made out of silk, we could dye it.... but silk doesn't dye very well. So we are told.
Fabric, thread, interfacing, lining and pattern was $55
We still need clasps for the front - we saw these as a maybe....but didn't pick them up

yea except she is going to make "F" but wear a skirt underneath....
Re: My wife's inspired Pirate for Pirate Texas RenFest
We bought a discount burgundy curtain for the skirt and have now cut all of the material from the pattern

sewing together - going to tea stain the lace before we sew it to the sleeves, but what about the rest of this dress? How am I going to make the bottom look like it was walked through london puddles?
I don't want to wash this thing in a machine.....
spray paint?
suggestions?
how do you weather a nice dress?

Yeah, spray paints a good way to go. Just like the video you put up on KttC a while back about the Boba Fett weathering. That process works extremely well. I'd also recommend experimenting with washes of acrylic paints at various levels of dilution. Probably some undiluted as well, stippled on, so it looks like mud.
Re: My wife's inspired Pirate for Pirate Texas RenFest
Or simply use mud?

Deep coffee stained the lace for the sleeves
We have 3 types of lace, which we will sew together first in layers and then sew to the jacket/bodice sleeves
Started sewing the jacket top together. Modified the pattern using the sleeves from the other piece
we still have not made a decision on the clasp system for the front

Backside of the skirt attached
the back of the jacket sides will be gathered up and won't look so Jacket like, plus the skirt will go down to the floor, so in the end it will look more like a dress and less like a jacket

She found this little craft hat at Hobby Lobby and I sprayed it Burgundy
Then she added all this foo-foo stuff to it
We took 3 layers of lace, sewed em together and attached a ribbon tie to it. These will go on the jacket sleeves
Fan I found on Amazon
