I think he means.....that's not jack's REAL prop.......it's a stunt thing I'm guessing.

Re: Bottom of Compass in OST
Hah!
Okay, if I may lend a machete to the collective intellectual thicket, the first picture Christian posted shows the compass looking normal, and then the second pic shows the bottom of said compass from the same shot, and the bottom appears to have some weird sort of wheel on it, and otherwise no actual "bottom" to the prop. My theory is that this is the wheel JD used to spin the compass when he was holding it. Brilliant catch, by the way, Christian!
Now as for real vs "fake" items, it's definitely hard sometimes to find a balance we feel comfortable with.
For instance, I've got a real sword with a real scabbard (real here having the meaning that it is made of high carbon steel, and it's "battle ready, but NOT an accurate reproduction of Jack's actual sword from the films), and I also have a plastic Disguise version. I have a real functional flintlock (but not Jack's flintlock) as well as a non-firing wood-and-metal flintlock replica (also not Jack's actual flintlock, but close enough that most people don't notice), and I also have a MR resin replica. And then I have a wooden compass I made myself, but it doesn't actually turn, which harms my ability to claim that it's "real," in my opinion. This is something I REALLY want to change, because it's actually rather obvious when I show the compass to people.
Otherwise, as far as cheats go, I have several things not made of proper materials - though this is changing slowly as I replace cottons with linnen, etc. The only thing I'm going to have a tough time with is the coat, because they don't make the "real" stuff anymore, and I can't afford the next best alternative, so instead I found some stuff with an excellent texture, but I'm going to have to do a bit of dying. I also currently have plastic buttons on my coat, but I have a whole set of Simon's replica ones to replace them with when I get the chance.
For a while I even had a foam hat from ELOPE which I had covered with upholstry leather, but I've finally upgraded to an all-leather hat (one of Mooney's old ones). Oh, and I also have a "real" goat skin shrunken head, which I know many people cheat with, using foam, sculpy, and the like. One thing I'm trying to fix is that I don't have a "real" baldric. That is to say, it IS real leather, but it doesn't have the embossing on it, and it doesn't have french edging, just a line I tooled into the edge to look like it. Oddly, I plan to replace it soon with a baldric that is NOT real leather (not entirely at least), because I bought the correct pattern vinyl from Joann to make a more "screen accurate" baldric out of. Despite not being made out of accurate materials, I feel this is probably a closer representation of Jack's actual baldric than the one I currently wear.
Ultimately though, I feel that it's not too hard to find "real" items for most of this stuff. Just sometimes it can get a little pricey, which is why I haven't upgraded my sword, pistol, or coat in so many years, and why it took me so long to actually get a real leather hat. And even then it was second-hand.
Something I find kind of funny is that most of us Jacks actually have one "real" item that JD didn't even have in the films. That being an actual chicken foot, from a real live (er, dead) chicken.

Re: Bottom of Compass in OST
Not enough weathering or no weathering at all is what breaks the costume the most IMO. Anything that's too bright, too shiny, too clean, too saturated colors... As we all know even the plastic toys look good when properly painted and weathered. Yet they'll never FEEL real to YOU of course. That's why I prefer items that might not be so SA (like my sword and pistol) but they feel real because they are made out of the proper materials. And they look real of course, they just don't look that SA. But with some work you can even make them look SA or at least closer to SA. It all depends on your personal preferences I guess - real feel or SA look.
Captain McCool, yeah, real chicken foot! I always thought this is the best item in my costume as it's better than the screen used fake one, ha-ha!

Very cool grab! It looks like there is a hinge on the left. Probably where where they open it and insert the rod to make it spin. Didn't they say in one of the behind the scenes discs that a rod was used to spin it?

As far as bloopers go, did anyone else notice when jack fell off of his cot/bunk the first scene he was on th qar ? Whenhe fell on the floor, the image was flipped , most people didnt notice that. Heck most people dont notice how the dvd covers have flipped images.
