Captain Jack in Bulgaria
Oi!
So I made a thread about my costume on KTTC, but I wanted to make one here as well.
My name is Andy, I'm from Bulgaria. This is my first Jack costume. Basically it's a DMC/AWE costume, though it is a budget one. Though I'm trying to make everything as SA as possible, I'm not really much into SA-ness right now. Not that I don't want to be, I made a lot of research, I know all about the offered SA products, all about Jack's look, I just don't have that kind of money at the moment. So maby some day...
Here are my first Jack photos (click on them for larger view):
MORE PHOTOS HERE: http://photobucket.com/captain-jack
Everything except the weapons, rings, buckles and bandanna is home-made.
If somebody's interested in budget things, here's a list of my stuff (click on photos and "Details" links for larger view):
Shirt - I made a pattern, got some nice material and had a seamtress to seam it.
Waistcoat - I made a pattern, got a very nice material for the front and had a seamtress to seam it.
Details 1, Details 2, Details 3
Breeches - home-made - heavily modified old pants.
Details
Sash - home-made - got the material quite cheaply
Details
Boots - home-made - real boots as a base, real leather stiched and glued to them
Details 1, Details 2
Compass - home-made - from balsa wood
Details 1, Details 2
Beads, sail needle, wave coin, beard extensions: - home-made - except the piece of eight coin from the MR piece of eight
Bandanna
Wig - home-made - wool dreads. No base wig. I'm using my own hair for the side and back tails.
Anamaria belt - a very old belt attached to the 25% smaller buckle.
Sun belt - a very old belt attached to the 25% smaller buckle.
Pelts - home-made - from an old hat and a scarf
Chicken foot - home-made - real chicken foot, spray painted
Pistol
Lace - home-made
Wrist wrap - home-made
Palm glove - home-made
Rings: - Flower, Stolen, Dragon - MR, Skull - Bahamut.
Total cost of everything is about $250 - $300. Plus maby $50 more for stuff I ended up not using.
I still need to make the baldric belt and I'm waiting for my mermaid to arrive soon. I'm considering a frock coat for halloween.
Finally I really want to thank the Jack/Pirates community and everyone else who helped me! Thanks!

Re: Captain Jack in Bulgaria
Oi!
I've been workin on lots of stuff, so here are some of them:
Flintlock mod:
Took it apart, stained the wood in dark brown, covered it in mat varnish. Also cut out the thing that was sticking out of the butt cap. Not a huge change, it's still a totally different pistol from Jack's but at least it's one step closer...
You can see what it looked like originally in the first post.
Sword mod:
Blade shortened, weathered and sharpened (not sharp enough to cut anything, but sharp enough not to look as funny as it does originally) by a blacksmith (didn't cost me anything, but normally this would cost like $20 or something). Handle modded by me - I remove the stupid skulls in the base of the blade using a file. Removed the silverish string on the hilt, covered the black area with epoxy resin and shaped it to look more like Jack's. Painted with a black spray, covered it with mat varnish. I made it look quite beaten -- i suppose that's what a real wooden hilt would look after years of pirating.
I made the scabbard from an old leather jacket I got for $8. I glued a tiny metal plate on the inside, so that the sword could still make the "shinnggg" sound when pulled out.
Back side photo here.

Re: Captain Jack in Bulgaria
So I wanted to show you boys and girls my new Anamaria belt. I got the Empire belt+buckle, but I didn't like the belt at all -- it's real leather, but it's too bright and shiny, too wide, too thick and doesn't have the correct edging... So instead of modding it I just made a new one. I found some AWESOME leather, great feel, great color... I made the belt "soft", it's what I think the real one was. Here's the result (I'll make some better photos later...):
Some details photos:
Details 1, Details 2, Details 3
Still not sure if I want the black spot on the belt. Still considering if I want to try to make the buckle more SA (silvery, less patina).
Fertility charm also made by me. Got the mermaid on ebay, sanded it. Hand-made the snake bone from clay, painted and weathered it.
Oh and here's my compass, I made some upgrades to it -- added a missing white piece on the back, covered it in matt varnish, weathered it a bit, added some real patina, redid and repainted the sundial and made the broken off white pieces more SA:

Nice work mate!!! I try to be "Screen Accurate" as I can, but really my Jack Sparrow is just that...me+Jack Sparrow. I make him a custom deal. And, in all honesty if you you act like Jack look like Jack and even talk like Jack, you are Jack. Thanks for sharing your pics, your costume work is AWEsome. Aye?
Re: Captain Jack in Bulgaria
Thank you all, mates!
And now something new I made... Yo-ho yo-ho, a pirate's flag for me!
More photos: Other side, details 1, details 2, details 3
Jack's flag, two-sided, hand-stitched. Edging was machine stitched. Weathered it as seen in AWE (holes and seams). Materials used -- linen and linen/cotton mix.
HD Screenshots of the flag from AWE here:
https://s1131.photobucket.com/albums/m552/captain_jack-sparrow/AWE/Flag/
What say you?
Also an upgrade of my waistcoat -- silversmith buttons replaced the old ones, new back material -- striped, gray-ish/brown-ish color:

Re: Captain Jack in Bulgaria
Gotta say, I'm unbelievably impressed with that flag! Nicely done! Until now, I was pretty much the only Jack out there with a hand-stitched replica flag, but yours beats mine hands-down!
Re: Captain Jack in Bulgaria
Thanks mates! That flag is my favourite item right now, because it's the most SA thing I have and it's 101% made by me.
Here's the baldric, also mad by me (Empire buckle):

I still need to make that buckle silvery-looking. And make some conchos of course...

How did you do the weathering on your vest? It´s awesome!
I´m a great fan of making fabric look old and destroyed and vintage style... but I´m not satisfied with my weathering method and grateful for all tips, help and hints.

Re: Captain Jack in Bulgaria
The past few weeks, I've been searching for a replica of Jack's flag. Anyone know of vendors or other Jacks that will make them custom? I was looking into sending the skull and sparrow design to a custom flag maker here in the states, but they all use plasticy-looking vinyl material and charge an arm and a leg for production.

I used sandpaper and... real dirt. Yeb, why not use the real thing? You can use that dirt that's for flowering purposes to make sure it's 100% "clean". However, that won't work if you want to wash it often, then you'll have to use paints.

It would be a better idea to find a seamstress to make it, this way you can make sure the fabrics will be what you want (and what you want is linen, muslin, or cotton).
But really, the best way to do it is to hand-sew it yourself, if you have the nerves for it.
Thanks!Blade Savvy wrote:Outstanding results mate. Love it all!
