The Bandana

well boys and girls..
Few years ago, i was tell, by a friend from the prop store london.. one of the shoppers found 8 bandanas and bought them from a maket in north London
( 2004 - 2005 )

then few sellers.. after the movies 2-3 came out, they started to sell "jack sparrow red bandanas ".. on ebay. as may you know as "Mango fever.".
he claimed he sold the bandanas to the production of pirates which is not true. Why -( cos i met the original source and it was not him ! ) i asked him to show me his "bandanas ".. he said sorry i dont have more of these i sold to them.. OK fair enough, but he said to me : but the bandanas im selling are exact the same !.. ((( NOT TRUE>! )))
i bought 1 bandana around 2005ish and of coz is not the same pattern .. Really similar but not the same.
I have never ever seen this pattern in any bandana on the market.:


ok so move on..
Now for the new movie, they got another bandana ( pattern )..
i met the owner of one screen used wig .. ( angelica`s wig ).. and i unfolded the bandana (( THE BANDANA IS NOT CUT IN HALF !)and study the pattern..is nothing like the picture above.
they told me they bought 10 bandanas from a guy in Shepherds Bush Market ( mostly they sells fabrics .. )
the bandana looks really dark not red.. is more like dark bermellon.

i started my search, and finally i found 2 bandanas , in that market, i asked him if he can get me more, and he said yeah but in about a week.. short story i came back and he got me the same as mango fever ...grrrrr!!.. and just 1 bermellon, he told me there is another guy on ebay who can help me.. i bought 3 more from a guy call. "styl-ts " but he send me 1 red 2 darks. i asked him if he has more "dark ".. and he said NO, but time to time, he got these "dark bandanas "
so basically i found 5 OST bandanas same pattern.
right ,the thing is, the blue in these bandanas are really BLUE so i thought ill do the same what i did with "mango fever " and bleach it to take off the color and start the process of DYE, but i made a mistake cos the the blue stayed and the black gone !.. so i ruined one..

next step..(( try to dont make the same mistake .so NO bleach !"). i dyed the bandanas bermellon- brown - pink. and DONE ! left them on my windows ( well we dont have to much sun in london..) i did it. the right color!









the last picture is on top, the same color as the movie, botton the same color as the promo pictures

so, mango fever still a good bandana, but not the same pattern ( dont worrie just me gonna notice that )

you need to be carefull, DO not use bleach ! or is gonna be Organge-ish
if you leave it outside is gonna fade red-orange. or pale red with the blue flowers showing up in your face.
is really difficult to get the right color, as you can see in the movie looks more pale, but is the filters the used ( color correction ..they said )
real life is exact like mine.. this is a sample of the original costume , with a day light, phone camera:


the best thing to do is dye it. DO NOT REMOVE the color.
start with pink and brown... you need to check .. dye it and dried take a picture and check color.. again and again... then leave it outside to fade.

which is 50% true. as he sometimes get the right pattern.. most of the time he gonna send you the "old red one" ( same as mango fever )

I always wanted this one, the pattern that has no flowers, only leafs/vines.

I got one from this seller six months ago. It said "Sourced from the same supplier, exactly the same design" then too, I'm 100% sure of it. Here's how it looked originally:


I weathered it in two steps:
1. Put the bandanna in clean water for about 10-15 minutes than take it out (the water becomes super-red). Throw out the red water, put some new clean water and put the bandanna in it once again. Repeat at least 10-15 times. Maby if you repeat it 30 or more times that will be all you need but I got tired of this so I got to step 2:
2. Put it out in the sun for about 10-15 days. Be careful not to leave it out in the sun for too long or it will become too orange-ish.

Awesome info adenry! Thanks for that! But is this the process to achieve the color for the AWE bandana or the OST bandana color?

Well, it's just a weathering method, at the time I didn't aim at an exact color, I just wanted it to look better, not shiny. I don't think you can achieve the pink color with that method, not if you leave it out in the sun. I left mine on the window for too long and it's a bit too orange-ish now than I would like. But that's more reallistic, the sun would make it orange-ish, not pink-ish. Not SA though. If you want it pink, wash the hell out of it many times and maby you'll get it.

I don't see a big difference between the OST and DMC/AWE bandanna, but I guess in OST it has a bit more orange.

Thanks mate! I've always felt the OST bandana looks more dark than in DMC and AWE. And has a maroonish/bermellon/pinkish colour to it.

Thats the right pattern
all the rest are NOT right.



about the colour NON of the bandanas are the SU colour, even the SU bandanas are dye it.
