The Pearl?
MOBILE, Alabama -- As storm clouds threatened Sunday, a crew at Master Marine Inc. in Bayou La Batre worked to complete what appears to be an expansive three-masted pirate ship in the south Mobile County coastal community.
Brett Dungan, president of Master Marine, said he is hoping to have the steel-hulled vessel finished by summer.
After that, the boat will likely be headed to the upper Florida Gulf Coast. It was unclear early today exactly what the boat will be used for.
In the last decade, Master Marine has specialized in military and energy industry work.
This isn't the first time skilled craftsmen from coastal Alabama have been called on to create a boat built for pirates -- or at least for those who play the skallywags on the big screen.
Back in 2005, a ship that resembled The Black Pearl was constructed at Steiner Shipyard in Bayou La Batre for the movie "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest" and Pirates of the Caribbean 3.
That all black ship was made to be a huge wooden prop built on top of a modern, 96-foot-long steel utility boat.
