Blackbeard's flag
Okay, I'm going to attempt to improve my lack of sewing skills by making this flag.
I have a white sheet soaking in a tea bath now.
Edit...Edit...Edit! Upon further examination of the image from the book, I think I will paint it instead.

Re: Blackbeard's flag
I looks like the skull and flame sections were cut out and stitched to the black background to me:

Couple close-ups can be seen in the background here: http://hollywoodmoviecostumesandprops.blogspot.com/2011/05/ian-mcshanes-blackbeard-costume-from.html

Love your avy Howlrunner!
Well I think I may ...sew it afterall. Painting of course is easier, but I
would like it to look authentic.
Any idea of the actual flag dimensions? Hahaha... I'm using a unfitted full cotton sheet which is 103" wide.

Re: Blackbeard's flag
Based on recollection I think around 4x6 feet (48 x 72 inches).
Once you develop your patterns will you share them with us?

Re: Blackbeard's flag
I guess I could...but I'm doing this along with my chalices so it's something that won't be finished right away
I'm going to sketch everything onto it onto brown paper (i have a gigantic roll) then transfer it onto the tea stained sheet and sew it onto the black one. I also will dilute some fabric dye for the colored areas of the skull. But, right now I'm goofing off in Sausalito, and will be home later.
I'll start drawing the skull onto paper tonight.

Re: Blackbeard's flag
Been sitting around with a cold and lost my inspiration...temporarily.
Feeling much better today...and I think I'm going with these dimensions...4 x 6, like the original at El Cap...altho I like the larger version I originally started with 6 x 8.
Be back with pics...
edit: 4 x 5 paper. I know it's suppose to be six feet, but I cut the paper too short by mistake...I'll blame it on the Dayquil!
Super rough outline, but does the skull look in proportion? Or too big?

Re: Blackbeard's flag
I think it looks a little too big, shape is great though. The overall height including lower jaw appears to be roughly 2/3 the height of the flag. I wouldn't scrap it, just make your flag bigger

Re: Blackbeard's flag
Ill have a better pic after dinner!
Edit:
I think the size I have now is right for 4x6.
Next, transfer it to the cotton for cutting and stitching....
The flames will be cut from red fabric, and "aged" with some airbrushing along with the skull.

Re: Blackbeard's flag
Yes, now that you've finished it off I'd say its perfectly sized.

Re: Blackbeard's flag
Thanks. I dyed a white sheet with an entire box of tea and it didn't work too well, it came out orangish. I added some brown dye, and now it's a pinkish orange so I bleached it back white. Tomorrow I'll water down some tan dye, and redye the sheet. Hopefully itll be closer to dirty off white of the original flag.
Re: Blackbeard's flag
You might add some grey in there if you have it.

Re: Blackbeard's flag
I'll use a watered down tan as the base color, and airbrush the other colors in. It does look like a gray with a slight green tinge.
I can cut another paper pattern for you if you're interested. Pm your addy.
