How weathered is the shirt?
With OST coming out soon, I'm going to weather my shirt some more to look a bit more weathered...But exactly how weathered is it? Obviously the weathering looks considerably lighter in photos, but how about in person?

Re: How weathered is the shirt?
I think there were varying degrees of dirty shirts, depending on the scene. However everything is always much dirtier than you'd expect. If in doubt make more dirty is probably a good motto :-)
Re: How weathered is the shirt?
I remember the first time i saw the real deal, i was so impressed how, they make the costume looks so dirty...
they over weathered some stuff.
i remember when we were at pinewood with Simon i told him.. " wow these costume looks sooooo dirty "...
this is the key ... over weathered !

They most likely over weather everything on set in order for it to show up better on screen.

Re: How weathered is the shirt?
Well that was I was curious about, because I know when I (or anyone else) weathers props/costumes that they look about 1/4 as weathered as they really are in person, so I was just curious to know if they looked extremly dirty or what in person. Thanks for the input Cristian!

Interesting. My thoughts there that the OST shirt was rather white with maybe a little gray weathering (not tan). It seems a lot lighter than the sash no?

Re: How weathered is the shirt?
I rather felt that way too, red. I definitely see some yellowish/tan-ish coloring in some shots, but those are mostly from Curse of the Black Pearl. The rest of the time it really does have this sort of grayish quality.
Re: How weathered is the shirt?
Maybe christian or simon or ronnie can confirm? Is the OST shirt heavily tea dyed? or is it more soot-like weathering?

Not a bad idea! I know a few other folks who have used diluted paint, or even spraypaint, to weather their (non-Jack) costumes. Seemed to work well for them.

Not much tea staining at all - it's all greyish and looks like he's been coal mining :-)
Re: How weathered is the shirt?
Heh, I was just thinking...a busy day at work for me gives my clothes a dirty look being around dust and soot. I sometimes touch parts that get carbon buildup on them and it gets all over my hands. Whenever I get my full costume, I should wear it to work and just rub my hands all over it to "weather" it lol

Re: How weathered is the shirt?
Anyone have suggestions on what to use to dirty up my shirt so it is more soot-y?

NAtural Linen. then weathered.
Re: How weathered is the shirt?
I should have phrased that better.
I have a natural linen shirt. What should I use to darken it and how (what techniques) should I go about weathering it to be more accurate?

Re: How weathered is the shirt?
Im not 100% sure yet how they do it.. ( weathering ) but what i saw and my multiples mistakes, i can say they used something like this :
http://www.dirtydown.co.uk/ spray paint special for the age looks .

Re: How weathered is the shirt?
Oh right! forgot about that stuff. A while back I was thinking about trying it on my boots, shirt, and possibly even the sash.
I wonder if I should go with a light spray of soot-black, or a more overall spray of grey for the shirt.

Re: How weathered is the shirt?
For those of us in the US, there is an alternative to the DirtyDown that is more readily available and essentially the same thing - spray DYE instead of spray PAINT. Nu Life Color Spray for shoes is pretty good. I bought Taupe, Grey and Black to do my weathering, and have been happy. Plus, they are available in a TON of shades and colors so you can build up a very realistic look. I know UM/Capt. Jack Saavy posted somewhere about using it as well.

Re: How weathered is the shirt?
I don't even remember making this thread....BUT, I finally, yes finally, weathered my shirt last week. I have an event coming up for the college Saturday, and have been asked to make an appearance. I left my Paulipoos shirt in a teabath for around an hour and 45 minutes, then pulled it out and let it air dry outside. Following that, I thought about how I could weather the tips of the sleeves, etc to be a bit black.
Tonight I noticed my newly painted mum's head hadn't really taken the paint I applied to it....So I took it and rubbed it all over the shirt, and sure enough, it got the light black weathering I had intended. So my mum's head weathering my shirt! LOL I might have to go back over it with a similar method using something else, as I don't think it's dark enough in pictures. However it's exactly how I want it to look in person. It has a smudged rubbed in look it it, and didn't streak, etc.

Hmmm....Coming soon? I should have some tonight, and if all fails from tomorrow's event! I had planned to work on my costume today, but I have a fine arts banquet to attend at my college tonight. :/
